TWSB: Wake Up in the Mornin’ Feelin’ Like Vivaldi

Here’s a cool little science-y blog for y’all:

As each metronome reverses its direction at the top of its swing, the energy is transferred to the platform below and, through the platform, to the other metronomes. At first, these transferred energies are all out of sync and the different waveforms interfere with one another. This continues until balance is eventually created, meaning that the interference pattern is a standing wave and is causing the metronomes to be “locked” into sync with one another.

Even that little rebel on the right.

Cool, huh?
[haha, get the title? ‘Tik Tok’ like metronomes going “tick-tock? I’m not TOTALLY crazy*.]

[*debatable]

How did I live without YouTube?

It might just be the sleep deprivation, but both of these are just hilarious. Again, if excessive (yet hilarious) angry cursing offends you, do not watch.

I have “Circus Afro” stuck in my head. WHY.

  • I think James Horner is my favorite film music composer.
  • Why do people fly in helicopters? They seem like the most unstable thing ever to fly.
  • “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” was on TV earlier. I haven’t seen that movie in forever.
  • At what point does bread become toast? I SEE AN EXPERIMENT IN THE FUTURE!
  • Oh my god, there’s a toaster museum. ROAD TRIP.
  • I want an art degree. Because I want an art degree.
  • I’d link to the actual site, but this video is pretty hilarious. Do not watch if you’re prone to seizures.

Gotta love this time of year.

Hahahaha, oh my god.

One small step for man…

The first human being to set foot on our moon died yesterday as a result of complications following a heart surgery that was performed earlier this month.

Rest in peace, Neil Armstrong. You may have been a modest and humble man, but your actions and courage certainly impacted and inspired the entire planet.

As tribute, I present the ever awesome, ever hilarious Brian Regan and his “I walked on the moon” skit.

ARE WE DOVES?!

Hey dudes! So it’s my last day here at PCC. I’m here three more nights, then I’m flying back to Moscow.

I’m excited/scared/nervous/anxious/antsy/hesitant. Which is pretty much how I always am, but at least this time I have a reason.

Oh, and this:

This song sounds really, really creepy sung in this manner.

My milkshake brought all the boys to the yard. Now what?

I have nothing interesting to blog about today (but what else is new)? Therefore, you get random Claudia thoughts.

  • Where do paranoid people go to recover after a severe illness? Somehow a place called the “ICU” doesn’t seem appropriate…
  • I had an almost irresistible urge to play with a Lite Brite this morning. Are those even sold anymore? Do the toy regulators think the little pegs are a too-risky choking hazard to even be on the market?
  • Speaking of super risky toys, that reminds me of Creepy Crawlers! Back when my grandma and grandpa lived in St. Louis and my mom and I went to visit, we played with this so much. Basically, the toy consisted of a bunch of different metal molds of bugs, a hot-plate type thingy, tongs, and Plasti-Goop. You’d squeeze the different colors of Goop into the molds, put the molds on the hot plate (or in the hot plate oven…I actually can’t remember), wait for the Goop to form in the mold, then dunk the burning hot molds in water before pulling out your now perfectly formed plastic bugs out with the tongs. Between the red hot molds, the hot plate, the undoubtedly toxic Goop, and the fact that said Goop probably looked like appetizing little snacks to many children, this was like eighty safety hazards at once. But that’s what makes it awesome. Anyway.
  • Where the hell has the first seven months of the year gone?
  • We use “iff” for “if and only if,” right? Well, why don’t we carry that over for writing the inclusive versus exclusive “or”? Why not use “or” when stating that you can have either option or BOTH options (e.g., “I can listen to music or I can paint my room”—there is no indication that I can’t do both) and then use “orr” when referring to the exclusive or (e.g., “You can get the soup or salad at a restaurant”—usually, they won’t let you have both). It looks a lot better than XOR/EOR/EXOR, etc. Just a thought.
  • Tumblr has taken over my soul.
  • I’ve watched so much Rage Quit these past few days that like 60% of my inner dialogue is Michael comments.
  • Speaking of Rage Quit, here’s another one for you all. Because 3:48 had me laughing like crazy. And because of the Fallout reference. As always, if excessive cursing offends you, don’t watch.

Edit: courtesy of letsplaygifs:

Does Mother Nature drive a Fjord?

Holy crap, guys. If the phrase “happy little trees” means anything to you, freaking watch this.

Beautiful tribute to a truly awesome dude.

That is all.

Welcome to “Random Crapatorium Stupid Stuff Central”

The sequential flow of this is dlfgaoghgfh.

  1. I discovered today that I can imitate Barney Rubble perfectly. Please don’t ask how I found that out.
  2. I get depressed when I don’t do enough statistics.
  3. I wish I had some modicum of intelligence to me. I mean seriously. I’m dumb. Dumbdumbdumbdumbdumbdumbdumb.
  4. People who spam Facebook with their inane drabble really bother me. Shut up, people, that’s what a blog is for.
  5. Speaking of inane drabble, I may have mentioned on here that I’m planning on blogging daily until I reach my 10,000th post. That will occur on September 15, 2033. 21 years, 2 months, and 7 days from now (total = 27 years, 4 months, 15 days). If my yearly word count will remain stable (average for last six years = 103,245), I’ll have a total word count of about 2,830,000 words. That doesn’t sound like much, actually. But 10,000 posts does. Bring it on.
  6. I had a dream about English parts of speech the other night. It was short and kind of cool. MAYBE A FLASH?!?
  7. Excitement + fear + future + being a failure = my life right now.
  8. I was feeling okay most of today. Now I’m depressed as all hell.
  9. Edit: Okay, nevermind.

Even though you’re expecting it from the title, it’s still so ridiculously perfect it’ll make you laugh. Made me laugh, at least.

Blog done.

It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

Of course, I’m talking about Gottfried Leibniz’ birthday!

The world has been without your physical presence for too long, my friend. Reincarnate so that I can date you stalk you pet your wig admire your genius in a completely appropriate and non-creepy manner.

Was going to buy some Choco Leibniz today, but I forgot. Instead, I made this:

I was listening to my music in the car the other day and realized how well Bittersweet Symphony would go with something from Coldplay. So I gave it a shot.

Happy birthday, my main man. <3

I was having a super crappy night.

And then I found this.

Better than Lethargic Bieber? You decide!

I also went digging through all my old saved files and found all my angsty poetry latherings of yore. They’re hilarious.

I am dark.
I am a spark.
I am the turn.
I am the burn.
I am the fork in the road.
I am the wind’s sorry ode.
I am hell in a shrouded form.
I am the thing that howls in the morn.
I am philosophy.
I am prophecy.
I am tomorrow.
I am today.
I am sorrow.
I am Gray.

SO DEEP, MAN. I also just realized I haven’t written a poem since “Seuss on the Loose.” That’s probably a good thing.

HEY BLOG TITLE! STOP SHOUTING AT ME!

(Edit: haha, sorry guys, here’s another one that slipped through the radar during one of my mass postings.)

Oh man. This guy reminds me so much of Ebeeto (Yogi Bear, anyone?). So again, if excessive curing offends you, don’t watch.

Is it sad that my internal dialogue is practically just like this?

The Original Half-Life is Fantastic

I started a new game of Half Life a week or so ago and have been playing my way through it. I’d totally forgotten how long it takes to get to the damn surface that it is the most fantastic game on the planet.

10 reasons why this game is awesome:

10. It’s Black Mesa! I’d totally want to work there if it actually existed. I have a mug (available from the Valve store).

9. “Start the rotors” is a running joke with me (mostly just in my head). Anytime I do something that I know is going to cause catastrophe later, I say to myself “I just started the rotors, didn’t I?”

8. Watching Stephen King’s “The Mist” with my dad like a decade ago (old Claudia is old) I thought, “holy crap, this is a total rip-off of Half Life!” Turns out Half-Life itself is based partially on “The Mist.” Oops.

7. Gordon’s 27 years old and all the other scientists are geezermobiles. I just find that hilarious.

6. This game is my late childhood-early adolescence. I think my mom’s old friend got some sort of bootleg copy for me to play (‘cause that’s what he did with everything) and then we went out and got a legit copy ‘cause we thought it was so awesome.

5. I really like the fact that two expansion games to the original, Opposing Force and Blue Shift, allowed you to play the game from two perspectives other than Gordon’s—as a soldier (Opposing Force) and as one of the security guards (Blue Shift).

4. I know it’s not directly related to Half Life gameplay itself, but when I found the Half Life references while playing Portal, I had a little squee. Okay, a major squee. Good video of the “Competing with Black Mesa” slideshow.

3. Cheating. Is. Hilarious. Activate god mode, noclip, and impulse 101 when you’re going through the tram system during the opening credits and you can go screw with all the scientists in the scenes you pass. I like to throw snarks at the security guards then sprint in the opposite direction.

2. Speaking of snarks…

1. CROWBAR!!

You can have your overly-fancy graphics, intelligent enemies, experience points, and dynamic environments. Just give me Gordon Freeman.

Bits n’ Bobs

I’m hyper tonight.

  • Two phrases I cannot stand: baby daddy and adorbs. Seriously, people?
  • The first three or four times I heard Nicki Minaj’s “Starship” I could have sworn instead of “and if you a G, you a G-G-G” she was saying “and if you a tree, you a tree tree tree.” Go listen to that part. Tell me that’s not what it sounds like.

I need to get off the internet.

  • Speaking of the internet: I predict that it won’t be long now until there’s some sort of college major relating directly to the internet. Like Web Studies or something. I can’t remember if I’ve ever said that here or not, but I’m saying it now anyway.
  • I like Adele, but Rumour Has It drives me insane. Probably ‘cause I’ve only ever really heard it in the office and since the radio is like halfway down the hall, all I hear is this weird half-melody that’s got a really annoying repetitive nature to it.
  • So I think I’m going to have to break down and buy the book form of The Brave Little Toaster because…well, because. Dude, I mean…it’s the brave little toaster.
  • I’d forgotten what a downer Prime was. Especially toward the end. It was supposed to be this light-hearted little story about talking numbers. It got dark as hell kind of on its own. It’s also kind of boring in parts. Gotta fix that. Might keep the darkness, though, ‘cause it works.
  • The chorus of David Guetta’s Without You really gets me going. This little animated lyrics video adds to that.
  • I really miss Rob tonight. What’s up with that?
  • I want this.
  • I’m in a major drawing mood. I might do something involving the zodiac signs because a) that’d be badass, b) I don’t care if it’s pseudoscience, the zodiac is fun, and c) I want to.
  • Dudes, Dethklok’s touring later this year and is coming to Phoenix. Tickets might have to happen.

END!

TroloNOOOOOO!

RIP, Eduard Khil. The internet loves you.

In tribute:

Trololo Rock Band!

Trololo Chiptune!

Trololo Meets Metal (I just discovered this. It’s phenomenal.)

That is all.

Damn you, YouTube

For the love of god, someone tell me why I find this so uncannily funny:

YouTube Poop: a post-postmodernism phenomenon or just…well…poop?

2:27-2:31 needs to be a looping .gif.

Also: [insert extreme Metalocalypse love here]

This freaking show asldfjefadjvaoerfnaf.

Massive Levi’s, Sam!

DUDES.

This is one of the greatest things I’ve heard in awhile.
Badass Coldplay song + badass Dethklok lyrics = extra super badass song.

Is it sad that this…calms me? I’ve listened to it on repeat for about 20 minutes now and I’m really chilled out.

Now we just need Nathan Explosion singing the Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle to the music of Paradise.

Don’t like product placement? Try an ice-cold Coca-Cola instead!

In my 100 Things list, I mention my constant singing of the Frosted Flakes “Hey Tony!” song when I was younger. Here is one such instance.

How these theatrics didn’t get me a paid endorsement job with Kellogg’s is beyond me. There’s a whole 60-minute tape of me doing crap like this.

Also, I still have that shirt. It was the “uniform” I got in T-ball when I played it in first grade.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

Ah. Socialness.

I miss having friends. Not like you guys aren’t still my friends…I guess I mean I miss having friends I can physically hang out with. Screw around town in the car with. Get naked with.

Well, I’m back in Moscow until Saturday. Hope to see you sillies at some point!

And until then, I leave you this, courtesy of Sean:

Tell me you didn’t at least smile. We laughed for like 15 minutes.

I Caught a Touch of the Random

One of these months, soon
I’ll post a blog in haiku.
How cool would that be?

In other news, I am really, really digging this song:

It’s got this amazing (sometimes not-so) subtle impending sense of apocalypse to it, just in terms of the music, not even the lyrics. Love it.

And on a completely unrelated note, I’m posting this here because I had a freaking dream about Rebeca and I laughing over it (we never watched it together, but she’s the one who linked to it like three years ago on Facebook):

This was the funniest thing I’d ever seen back when I watched it during an extremely sleep-deprived grad school week.

COLORZ

Oh my…the colors…what is this I don’t even…

I want those arm sleevy things and rainbow bow that first model’s wearing.

This looks like the most fun thing ever. 2:06? I would wear that 24/7, indecency laws be damned.

Also, Superbass is enhanced supremely by the addition of stringed instruments.

BLOG OVER!

CANADIAN TAXES TIME!

I am once again in shock regarding how difficult seemingly small/simple things can be when handling things across the US/Canadian border.

I’ve posted this video before, but I’m posting it again to support my point (and because it’s pretty cool):

We’re practically conjoined twins. As such, some of the things one might think as difficult to accomplish on an “international” level (like, I don’t know, moving all your possessions + animals across the border in an unmarked white van with suspicious tinted windows*) are surprisingly easy and hassle-free.

Simpler things, like terminating a Canadian cell phone contract (even after waiting until the contract is up), take OMGWTFBBQ-levels of work.

Taxes? They’re kind of in-between. There’s really no way to explain that yes, I lived in Canada last year, but I lived in two different provinces AND I didn’t actually live there on December 31st because I had to go back to the States in October. So I just wrote a nice little note and stuck it in with my return. Hopefully they’ll get the info they need and not send Dudley Do-Right down to Arizona to get me.

…Though that WOULD be entertaining.

Also: “Dr. Binmidnildedindindin.” God I’m glad Metalocalypse is back.

*Yes, this is how I moved all my stuff up for grad school. Big white just-the-right-size-for-bags-of-illegal-substances van, half-drugged cat on a towel, nervous pair of Idahoans in the front seats. Went inside, showed them my passport and study permit, and we were on our way to Vancouver. Same thing happened going to Ontario.

w00t

Oh yes.

This is an amazing song.

Lyrics:
Some nights, I stay up cashing in my bad luck; some nights, I call it a draw
Some nights, I wish that my lips could build a castle
Some nights, I wish they’d just fall off

But I still wake up, I still see your ghost
Oh Lord, I’m still not sure what I stand for
What do I stand for? What do I stand for?
Most nights, I don’t know anymore…

This is it, boys, this is war – what are we waiting for?
Why don’t we break the rules already?
I was never one to believe the hype – save that for the black and white
I try twice as hard and I’m half as liked, but here they come again to jack my style

And that’s alright; I found a martyr in my bed tonight
She stops my bones from wondering just who I am, who I am, who I am
Oh, who am I? Oh, who am I?

Some nights, I wish that this all would end
Cause I could use some friends for a change
And some nights, I’m scared you’ll forget me again
Some nights, I always win
I always win

But I still wake up, I still see your ghost
Oh Lord, I still don’t know what I stand for
What do I stand for? What do I stand for?
Most nights, I don’t know…

So this is it? I sold my soul for this?
Washed my hands of that for this?
I miss my mom and dad for this?
No. When I see stars, when I see stars, that’s all they are
When I hear songs, they sound like a swan, so come on
Oh, come on. Oh, come on.

That is it, guys, that is all – five minutes in and I’m bored again
Ten years of this, I’m not sure if anybody understands
This is not one for the folks back home; I’m sorry to leave, mom, I had to go
Who the fuck wants to die alone all dried up in the desert sun?

My heart is breaking for my sister and the con that she called “love”
But when I look into my nephew’s eyes…
Man, you wouldn’t believe the most amazing things that can come from…
Some terrible nights.

The other night, you wouldn’t believe the dream I just had about you and me
I called you up, but we’d both agree
It’s for the best you didn’t listen
It’s for the best we get our distance…

Yes, I bolded the ones pertinent to me right now. Yes, I know that makes me a tween. Bite me.
