Hey, remember back when my blogs were good?
Me neither.
I may have mentioned this video on here before, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never posted it or really talked about it. And I re-discovered it the other day, so here you go.
This nifty little song is called Prisecolinensinenciousol. Written by Italian Adriano Celentano, the song’s lyrics are total gibberish designed to sound like American English.
Catchy, ain’t it? I remember one spring when Nick and I would talk to each other in fake French we actually convinced some dude at Hastings that we were really speaking French. We’re bad people, oui?

WHY IS THIS SEMESTER STILL HAPPENING?!
You get this and only this today, because if I try to talk about anything of substance I’m going to have a panic attack.
You know it’s pretty bad when Michael’s screaming is actually calming. I think next time I’m correcting tests I’m going to write “YA DONE GOOFED, SON!” for every wrong problem.
Well this is beautiful
Sit and enjoy.
I’m telling you now that this week’s blogs are going to suck (I mean, even more than usual) because I’ve got two tests and no free time and no sanity left for any sort of coherent blog posts. Apologies in advance. Maybe this weekend I’ll make a drawing for y’all.
Uh…bye.
Dear Brain: at least TRY to chill out when I’m asleep, okay?
So last night I had a dream about C++. Our professor had changed our final exam to a final essay/report. I got the brilliant idea to create a program to write my paper for me. So that’s what I did, and I turned the paper in with total confidence that I’d get an A. Then I got it back and got like a 20% because I forgot to write my program to print the citations for all the sources I used in the paper. Cue total panic mode.
Hooray dream-induced panic attacks!
Anyway.
Haha, the Harlem Shake is actually kind of hilarious.
Here’s Western Ontario with their classy rockin’ (I’ve been in that hallway!)
That guy in the bottom left corner with the big finger, hahaha.
And then there’s UI.
Oh, UI.
[seething]
OH MY GOD today has been the most frustrating day I’ve had in a long time. Our CS lab assignment made me want to stab myself in the face.
Why. Am. I. So. Bad. At. Everything. I. Do.
Flaugh.
Anyway.
This made me laugh (and made me oddly aroused):
Warning: wear headphones if watching in a public place unless you want a lot of weird looks.
In this blog: I exclaim random crap using ALL CAPS
Because it’s an “all caps” type of day.
THANKS C++ FOR YOUR EXTREMELY SPECIFIC DESCRIPTION OF THE ERROR ON LINE 19 I CAN TOTALLY FIX IT NOW
HAHA THE VARIABLE “TIME TO PHD” IS CONSIDERED AN EXAMPLE OF SURVIVAL DATA IN THIS EXAMPLE IN MY TEXTBOOK. I GUESS I DIED.
I STUMBLED UPON THIS WHILE IN THE LIBRARY AND I LAUGHED INAPPROPRIATELY LOUD:
THIS TOO:
Rooster Teeth does it again
I haven’t laughed this hard in forever, holy freaking crapspackle.
I love how Michael is just horrified as Gavin’s gleefully botching attempt after attempt.
“We’ve lost everything. We’ve lost everything.”
Watch until the end, it’s so worth it.
Oh man.
TWSB: The Beauty of Stats
Here’s some beautiful stuff, people.
This Galton board (or “bean machine” or “quincunx”) demonstration of the Central Limit Theorem is one of the most beautiful things in the world to me.
While the data and trends are fascinating themselves in this demonstration, it’s really Rosling’s enthusiasm about how freaking cool this stuff is that makes me love this video. Yes, I know I’ve posted this one before. Watch it again, it’s badass.
I apologize for how sparse my TWSB posts have been lately; school exploded last week and that’s basically all I’ve had time for. Expect a lot more calculus-related blogs, though, so if you’re into that…
TWSB: Boston Dynamics Takes Alpha Dog to Obedience School
GUYS IT LISTENS TO US NOW!
Alpha Dog, Boston Dynamics’ creepiest freaking dog creature to date, has been updated and now is able to follow vocal commands. He’s quieter than his predecessors and is still able to carry 400-pound loads, navigate uneven terrain, right himself when he bites it, and creep people out.
Video!
Haha, 2:16: “LS3, do a barrel roll!”
2:22: “Nailed it! Let’s go.”
Post!
So after the kilogram news a couple days ago I’ve been reading a lot about the SI units. I totally should make a superhero team (The SI Squad?) with members named after the SI units. Like Captain Kelvin, Senor Second, Lady Candela, The Mole, etc. They battle the group of villains known as the Imperial Units. The evil Dr. Foot, the Ferocious Fathom, the Malicious Mile, etc.
So totally drawing these guys. Or at least making them in HeroMachine.
Oh, and here’s a random survey.
What are you currently reading?
Philosophers at War, which is about the calculus controversy (no, this will never end now), and The Remains of the Day, which is actually rather hilarious at points.
Describe your life in exactly 10 words.
School and teaching and hopefully overwriting some of my ignorance.
When is your birthday?
Soon!
Are you in a relationship?
Ha. No.
What’s your favorite movie?
I love Sunshine, man. It stole my soul.
Are you a risk-taker?
In my own way, yes.
Are you happy with your body?
I’m happy with my immune system. That’s about it.
What’s something that you’ve never had?
A non-dysfunctional romantic relationship.
If someone knew absolutely nothing about the internet, what one thing would you show them to explain what the internet is?
You know it’s true.
If you had a time machine that could only travel backwards, what time would you travel to?
1650. I’ll give you one guess as to why.
Have you ever spent the night in a hospital?
Twice. Only one of those two times was I coherent enough to realize I was in the hospital.
Have you cried this week?
I cry all the time, man.
Do you like beets?
Beets are badass.
Noise from the ‘Net
I’m getting all my YouTubin’ out now because once classes start I won’t have time to do much else but study/work/revel in joy.*
Oh man. I’ve seen this before like AGES ago, but holy freaking crap.
Pizzzzza.
Large Macs.
BONBONBONBONS. The way he says it. I’m on the floor, oh my god.
Dude. This song and video.
It’s Rage Quit, so excessive cursing warning and all that. And it’s Nyan Cat, so excessive seizure-inducing flashing warning and all that as well.
I’m just gonna put this here. It’s actually a really catchy song; I listened to it on repeat for like two hours the other day.
END!
*Who am I kidding, nothing can keep me off of the Tubes. Damn you, Al Gore. Damn you.
Quine, NOOOOOOO!
So I linked to a super awesome discussion of Leibniz’ Monadology the other day, right?
Well, if you’ve listened to that (if you haven’t go do it now, fools!), I highly recommend The Partially Examined Life to get more amazing discussions of a wide variety of philosophical works by some of the major dudes in philosophy. Click on the “Podcasts” tab up at the top to see the whole list of discussions.
Seriously, these are awesome. Next up for me is HUUUUUUME! Freakin’ love Hume, man. That’s why I have this shirt.
Also, UI drama is happening because of my tuition waiver thingy. I had whole rant typed out but I deleted it because I’m trying to deal with frustration in a more constructive manner this year. That will probably end with me repressing everything because that’s just how I am, but what’re you going to do?
OH, and if any of you haven’t seen/heard this yet (or seen anything by DJ Earworm):
Yes, this post was heavy in the “stuff on the internet that’s not mine” material. I’m stressing about the upcoming semester, deal with it.
TWSB: Math: Ur Doin It Wrong
So today’s topic immediately brought to mind this little joke, which I’m sure you’ve all seen if you’ve traversed the Tubes for more than ten minutes:
I know it’s not the same thing, but that’s what it reminded me of.
Anyway.
Today’s science blog has to do with the phenomenon called anomalous cancellation. Anomalous cancellations are arithmetic procedural errors with fractions that, despite being errors, will still result in a correct answer.
Examples from Wiki:
So it’s basically like looking at a problem and, as if you don’t know how to correctly solve it, trying to solve it intuitively based on the features of the numbers in the problem.
I might just be imagining it (because I’m me and I’m a spaz), but I feel like I come across this type of thing a lot. That is, I feel like I come across many situations in all my stats stuff where the correct answer can be achieved by seemingly “simple” methods that, in actuality, are incorrect method-wise but still lead to correct answers.
But again, I might be imagining it.
Anyway, I felt this an adequate topic for today’s blog, as I’m sure we’ve all come across problems like this but were not (at least, I was not) aware that such things had an actual name.
Numbers are crazy buggers, aren’t they?
Edit: Get your butts over to YouTube and listen to this awesome discussion of Leibniz’ Monadology. This pretty much made my week.
Edit 2: I don’t know why I didn’t just embed the freaking video in the first place. Claudia dumb!
This Week’s Science Blog is Absolutely Cool
(HA TEMPERATURE JOKES DON’T YOU JUST LOVE ME?)
Here is a fascinating PBS documentary on the history of cold and absolute zero. I don’t really know what else I can really say here aside from WATCH THIS! Seriously, it’s really quite interesting.
I’m not much of a movie person
But holy freaking crap spackle, Sunshine is fantastic.
I first happened upon this movie via its beautiful, beautiful soundtrack (the Adagio was actually the background music in that “Science Saved My Soul” video I posted back on October 25th).
So my mom and I wound up at Bookmans the other day (because passing up a trip to Bookmans is a sin) and I happened to find the movie. So I bought it.
Watched it tonight.
Holy crap.
I actually hesitate to post the trailer, ’cause I don’t think it’s an accurate depiction of how cool this movie really is. So instead you get this little teaser. And this happens like in the first fourth of the movie, so there’s a LOT that goes on after this.
NNNNNNNFFF, that music.
Anyway.
What’s really cool about this movie is the amount of research that went into making it accurate. Sure, there are of course some major inaccuracies (welcome to Movie Land), but the director and cast really went through a lot to try and get it as accurate as they probably could and still have it be an interesting movie.
Like, a lot of thought went into it. It’s like the antithesis of Atomic Train.
If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend it. It’s very, very good.
Be warned, though: there’s a scene in there that really reminded me of Vault 106 in Fallout 3 (the one in which you hallucinate in purple). If that creeped you the hell out, so will that scene in the movie. Fair warning.
Toasters are Intrinsically Brave
I just hit my 130,000th stumble on StumbleUpon. That translates quite concisely to, “Claudia spends way too much time on the internet.”
In addition, I just found a video of the entire 2010 Winter Olympics opening ceremony.
Rockin’!
Throwback Thursday
Was I on drugs when I made this (2007)? Seriously.
This is why I shouldn’t be allowed around Flash.
Also, crappy quality is crappy because Flash 5’s like “LOL WHAT’S ‘OUTPUT TO .WMV?'”
Oh my goodness, internet.
These. Are. Fantastic.
For any poor soul not familiar with the term “YouTube Poop”, a rough definition from KnowYourMeme describes it as, “[a] video that has been made with appropriated footage and collage editing techniques for the purpose of either annoying or entertaining viewers in the increasingly indifferent world of Youtube.”
These are two of the greatest Poops I’ve ever seen.
“Never ever?”
I was literally on the floor laughing at the Six Flags and the raving. And “BAAAABAAAAAR!”
Haha, sorry. I thought these were fantastic. This is why I want to study the internet.
So tell me something:
Why in the hell was I not trained with these awesome videos?
I never knew the hidden sexual potential of that job.
I have such an urge to remix this.
Oh Wendy’s. You have achieved a whole new level of cool.
TWSB: Angles of Understanding
Geometry makes things so much clearer, doesn’t it?
Holy crap
This is beautiful. I was freaking bawling throughout this whole thing, I swear to god.
How can there possibly be hatred on this planet when we’re all so undeniably and fundamentally connected?
I am you. You are me. We are this.
(Edit: this is actually just a third or so of the longer, full vid, found here. It’s just that the rest goes into the old “religion vs. science” insanity and is not nearly as awesome as this first part in my opinion. But anyway.)
Jajaja
Oh, politics. Politics, politics, politics.
“My dog is on the roof! My dog is on the roof!”
I freaking lost it.
MY EARS
Guys. This deserves its own blog. Because that freaking beat is NNNNNNNNNFFF.
