Another music post, sorry

UGH, marathon grading of STAT 217 midterms gives me a headache.

But anyway.

So awhile ago (like back in March or something) I said that of all the Marvel movies, Thor: The Dark World had the best music.

But now I take that back. BOTH Thor movies had the best music, in my opinion. The current song I can’t get out of my head is from Thor and is called Sons of Odin.

Other favorites:

Pentatonix

Pentatonix is legit, yo. I almost like this better than the original.

And for anyone who thinks that they can only do covers:

I love the makeup/costumes.

Is a highly vocal cheese drawer considered a cheddarbox?

Okay, so I know it’s been out on YouTube for a couple days now, but I just got around to listening to Adele’s new song, Hello.

And holy crap.

A lot of the YouTube commenters are saying it’s not one of her better songs, but I think it’s the best one she’s done.

It hurts my soul in the best way.

Niiiiiiiiice

That opening is beautiful. I really like this song. It’s my second favorite Passion Pit song.

(Can you guess which is my favorite?)

Yay. This is nice.

This is the guy who does the United State of Pop mashups at the end of the year. His summer ones are more hit-and-miss than the end of the year ones, but this one’s pretty good.

MOON THE WALK

WALK THE MOON is now one of my favorite bands, I think.

I discovered them—as I’m sure most people did—through their awesome song Shut Up and Dance. However, they’ve got other songs that, in my opinion, are just as good and maybe even better. Here, have some!

Different Colors

Avalanche

Aquaman

Work This Body (I love this song, holy crap)

Aria Listening? (LOL OPERA JOKE)

OH MY GOD, so in the finale episode of Daredevil, the aria Nessun Dorma is featured during a particular sequence (not going to say anything more…spoilers, you know) and for the past few days I’ve been trying to find the version that was in the show ‘cause it was freaking beautiful.

But I just found a video of Pavarotti singing it instead and it’s the greatest thing ever.

Wow.

Waltz

This is awesome. I had no idea Anthony Hopkins had written a waltz.

Gold

Want to see the difference a good remix makes with a song?

YOU KNOW YOU DO!

Okay. So here is Gold by Gabriel Rios, the Thomas Jack Radio Edit version.

Nice, huh? It’s my most recent 5-star and my currently most-played song.

And here’s the original Gold by Gabriel Rios:

Such a different mood, oh my god. At this point in the year I’m slowly starting to formulate the premise for my NaNoWriMo endeavor, and the un-remixed song fits perfectly with the general idea/atmosphere I’ve got going.

Sorry, I just really like the contrast between the original and this particular remix.

WOO!

PSHOOOOOOOO!

As you may have noticed by the songs I tend to post on this here blog, I really like remix versions of songs.

Remixes and mashups, really.

So I actually wanted to see what percentage of my “new” music (i.e., my daily downloads since 2010) is remixes/mashups.

‘Cause why not.

  • 2010: 31/365
  • 2011: 15/365
  • 2012: 32/366
  • 2013: 40/365
  • 2014: 41/365
  • 2015 (so far): 31/130

Total: 190/1956 or 9.7%. That’s a smaller percentage than I thought it would be, but I’d still say it’s a pretty decent chunk.

Oh, and just for funzies, have one of the better songs I’ve found this year (it’s a remix!):

It’s been awhile, but…

What I say: I love Passion Pit

What I mean: Sleepyhead. I love Sleepyhead.

Sleepyhead

I have a problem.

OK!

So guess who Nate and I got to see in concert tonight?

Hint:

Okay, that’s less of a hint and more of a giveaway, but whatevs.

We saw OK Go!

It was super awesome. It was also super loud (we’re pretty much concert newbs so we didn’t bring earplugs), so we just stood out in the hallway—which gave us as good a view as any of the band given the number of people at the venue—and danced and sang along with the songs we knew.

I was surprised that they played Here It Goes Again and Get Over It, since both of those songs are older, but they did! They also played I Won’t Let You Down near the very end, which was pretty much the one song I was waiting for the whole night.

There were a few other songs that they played which I’d never heard but liked, so those will likely be my daily downloads for the next few days.

WOO! First concert!

Pre-Music-Project Music

HEY, FOOLIOS!

So I’m a little bit more than halfway through my big Decade of Music project, right? And you know how at the end of each year since 2010 I’ve been giving you my yearly music reviews containing all the year’s five-stars and all that?

Well, since I have absolutely nothing else to blog about today, I figured I’d provide you with my favorite pre-2010 songs, since there are several ones that are damn awesome but kind of got cheated because I got them before 2010.

(Note: I’ve probably mentioned each of these at least once on here. Too bad, you’re gettin’ ‘em again.)

COMMENCE!

Claudia’s Top 10 Pre-2010 Songs

Sleepyhead
What did you expect to be at the top of this list, honestly? Sleepyhead was the king of my “most played” playlist for a long, long time. It’s not top of the list anymore, but I still really, really like it when I listen to it. The chorus makes me tingly.

Sleepyhead (Jazzsteppa Remix)
This was the first Sleepyhead remix I’d downloaded and it’s still one of my favorite songs. It took the amazing chorus and made it OHMYGOD.

Get Over It
This is still my all-time favorite Ok Go song. It predates their insanely intricate music videos (the song’s actually from 2002!), but the music video is still pretty tight. I just really like the energy of this song.

Symphonies
This song juuuuuuust missed being a 2010 download; it was an iTunes freebie in like November 2009 or something like that. Fantastic song. Dan Black’s voice is really nice.

Lights and Music
One of the earliest iTunes freebies I ever downloaded. The chorus (2:02) totally makes this song.

Pieces of Me
I LIKE THIS SONG, OKAY? It reminds me of high school and pre-iTunes when I had to either wait until I heard my favorites songs on the radio or buy entire CDs for just one song I liked.

Breathe (LMC Extended Club Remix)
The original song is slow and meh, but this remix makes me super happy. Listen to this one with headphones that have a good bass.

O Magnum Mysterium
This song corresponds with a really good college semester (spring 2007). I call that my “enlightenment semester” (which is not a pretentious name at all, right?) because that was the semester I took Literature of Western Civilization II, which really introduced me to a lot of stuff that I probably would not have studied on my own. It took my educational path in a different direction.

Hide and Seek
I found this by accident on iTunes and still just really, really love it.

The Riddle
My friend Jacob introduced me to this song in 2008 and it was my number one most-played until Sleepyhead came along. The music video’s pretty cool, too.

LET’S GET ‘EM

I HAVE HAD
THIS SONG
STUCK IN MY HEAD ALL DAMN DAY

Remember when we’d just randomly quote parts of this?

Wonderful Noise

Holy crapples. If you haven’t watched Gravity yet, you need to do so, even if it’s just for the scene that goes along with this amazing song:

Or just for that song alone.

Tacos! (This post has nothing to do with tacos.)

I’m pretty sure that Gabe Flaherty is one of the best remix artists out there. He’s the guy who did the amazing remix of Coldplay’s Paradise that’s still one of my absolute favorite songs. His other remixes are super cool, too. Here are my favorites (including Paradise). Check them out, and if you like them, give his YouTube channel a look!

Have a good song. You’re welcome.

What the hell, Chromeo. What is this and why must I have it in my ears?

New five-star. First five-star of the year!

Claudia’s 365 Days of Music: Year 5 – A Review

Hey look, it’s year five! That means I’m halfway through this project. Pretty cool. Let’s get to some stats, shall we?

Total songs: 365
Total time: 25 hours, 39 minutes, and 28 seconds
Total size: 2.33 GB
Mean song length: 4:14.16

The Five Stars
Listed (sort of) in order of acquisition!
Suit & Tie (Oliver Nelson Remix) by Justin Timberlake
Metropolis by Owl City
Speed of Love by Owl City
Not a Bad Thing by Justin Timberlake
Magic by Coldplay
O (Fly On) by Coldplay
Don’t by Ed Sheeran
Jealous (I Ain’t With It) by Chromeo
I Won’t Let You Down by OK Go
Pumped Up Kicks (Gabe Flaherty Remix) by Foster the People

The five most beautiful/touching songs of the year:
O (Fly On) by Coldplay
Midnight by Coldplay
River Flows In You by Yiruma
Blue and Green Music by Samuel R. Hazo
Piano by Jake LaVallee

The Overall Top Five
Magic by Coldplay
It should be clear to anyone who reads these yearly reviews that I’m a pretty big Coldplay fan. Magic is, well…magic, haha. I love the tempo of this song and of course the general sound as well. It’s just so chill and easy to listen to.

Suit & Tie (Oliver Nelson Remix) by Justin Timberlake
This remix is vastly better than the original song. If you kind of like the original but aren’t too big of a fan of it, I’d recommend checking this out, especially if you like more of an electronic feel to your music.

Jealous (I Ain’t With It) by Chromeo
I love the kind of old school feel of this song. It’s also got a nice bass line.

I Won’t Let You Down by OK Go
I’m actually not really sure why I like this song. I mean, it’s a good song in general, but I’m not sure why I like it more than others. I’m listening to it now and am noticing that it’s got an almost disco-esque feel to it, so maybe that’s it.

O (Fly On) by Coldplay
This is a BEAUTIFUL song. It’s actually quite haunting if you listen to it in the right mood. I can’t recall when exactly it was, but remember awhile back I mentioned that I’d like this song played at my funeral/pseudo-funeral/whatever people end up doing when I die? Yeah, that’s still what I want.
(And then scatter some of my ashes over Leibniz’ grave…or at least sprinkle a little in the air close by if you’re not allowed to dump ‘em.)

Now, the obligatory pie charts:

dfsdfs

ds

This was a very pop-heavy year, haha.

Onward to year six!

System of an Up

Approximately a year ago, my friend Wayne introduced me to the awesome a cappella group Pentatonix with the following Daft Punk medley they did:

Awesome, huh? Well, have two more (one is a Christmas song, so this is totally legit for a blog post so close to Christmas).

Want some more Christmas, don’tcha? Have some Steven Sharp Nelson rocking the cello.

Woo!

I tripped the light fantastic and now he’s suing me

Woah, dudes. This is awesome.

This is the same guy who did the video for Blockhead’s The Music Scene.

2014 Beats

The 2014 DJ Earworm mashup is here!

Considering how crappy the music’s been this year, this is an amazingly catchy mashup. I like it (though it took me a few listens).

Let it Blog

OOPS I DISCOVERED “LET IT GO.”

Can you believe I’ve never actually listened to that song until now? And that I still haven’t seen Frozen? You’ll notice, once I get my November music posted, that I now have like 7 versions of the song though, haha.

Though this one’s my fave, because the Piano Guys are awesome and that white cello is super beautiful.

Tree Tunes

So this is the first NaNo where it’s felt like my story should have a soundtrack. Not sure why. If this were ever good enough to be adapted into a movie, it’d sure be a slow-moving one, what with the main characters being trees and the whole story mostly consisting of tree thoughts and tree conversations (though there is a fire). But over the past few days I’ve already found some good tree music (both in my music library and in general), so I figured why not make a list of songs that sound very “tree-like” to me.

Onward!

  • I Bet My Life – Imagine Dragons (this would be like the main song; this is very tree-ish to me for some reason)
  • I See Fire – Ed Sheeran
  • Magma – The Vein
  • All That We Had Is Lost – Postiljonen
  • Touch the Sky – Iambic

Haha, okay, so I guess there aren’t that many. BUT STILL.

Sorry, not much to say today.

OK Go? More like OK WHOA amirite?

I didn’t like this song at first.
Now it’s a five-star.

Also, I’m pretty sure the next step in OK Go Music Video Land is to shoot a vid in space or something.

You Too?

Why is everyone bitching about the free iTunes U2 album?
It’s FREE MUSIC, PEOPLE.

And if you don’t like it, it takes like 3 seconds to delete it.

Anyway.

I myself am not a huge U2 fan. I don’t dislike them, they just aren’t really my type of music. However, I really do like California (There Is No End to Love) from the free album. Can’t find it on YouTube so I can’t link it, but if you have iTunes and still have the album, check it out!
