OH SHIT IT’S ANOTHER SENNHEISER BLOG

Sorry, I’m just in love with these headphones and how much they’ve reignited my love for certain songs.

This includes:

  • Viva La Vida – Coldplay (you can really hear the bass line with these headphones and it’s so good)
  • Big Country – Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (this song is an experience with any headphones, but again…BASS)
  • Doin’ It Right – Daft Punk (you can feel this song in your freaking bone marrow, yo)
  • Silhouette – Owl City (it hurts my soul, but it sounds so good doing it)

There’s more, but these are the big ones right now.

Freaking love these headphones. Thanks, husband!

The Passion of the Pit

I don’t know why it took me so long to listen to Sleepyhead with these Sennheisers, but oh my god.

Sleepyhead was added to my music collection before my Decade of Music project (February 23, 2009 more specifically). It’s been surpassed by quite a few songs on my overall ranking of best songs, but I still maintain that its chorus is one of the best things I have ever heard.

(Chorus at 1:20)

I mean, I judge the quality of a Sleepyhead remix based on what they do with that chorus, which is why the Jazzsteppa Remix (makes the chorus a little slower and a lot more prominent with some serious bass) and the Cillo Remix (makes the chorus a bit more techno-ish and, again, more prominent with a chill vibe) are my two favorite remixes of this song.

Sorry, it’s been a while since I’ve praised Sleepyhead. I’ve had a lot of other songs to rave about, but this one definitely has not fallen off my radar.

Sennheisers

-A poem by Claudia

Current Favorite Nighttime Activity:

  1. Sit at computer desk with Sennheisers affixed to ears.
  2. Listen to music. Any music.
  3. Cry a lot due to the fact that every song sounds so much better with these headphones and it makes me goddamn emotional.
  4. Cry a lot due to other general reasons.
  5. OOPS, IT’S 4 AM.

(I think I posted a similar blog like a week ago, but I don’t care!)

Under the Tucson Sun

This is a really well-done set of drone captures of Tucson. It’s got some neat transition effects in there that kind of set it apart from your typical time lapse/drone flyover.

Also, CHVRCHES song.

ZOMg

Duders.

Postmodern Jukebox is coming to Calgary!!

March 8th.

It’s…it’s so tempting to get some tickets. But then I have to go to something, and I don’t usually like to go to things.

Because I’m lazy and like to be alone at home.

10 Year Challenge

“But moooom, all the cool kids are doing it!”

Unlike about 10% of the fads on the internet, this one isn’t deadly. You just post a pic of yourself from 2009 and compare it to one from the current year (2019, obviously).

GO!

01-13-2019

One thing to note about these comparison pictures (for myself and probably most people doing it) is that the first picture was probably taken with an actual camera, while the second was taken with a phone camera. So that might affect things.

ANYWAY.

Observations:

  • My poor industrial piercing is gone.
  • I am legitimately more tan than I was in 2009. 2009 me thought walking was a stupid waste of time and only really went outside to catch the bus to campus. 2019 me spends 4+ hours per day walking outside.
  • I think I look better with bangs, but those goddamn bangs were so hard to deal with.
  • No gray hair yet! I’m shocked.
  • My facial structure looks a little bit different in every aspect except for my lips. My lips look exactly the same.
  • Mo’ glasses, mo’ problems.
  • My eyes look waaaay darker in the 2019 version, though I’m pretty sure that’s mostly lighting. My eye color does vary from day to day and they’re rarely as green as they are in the 2009 version, but they’re definitely not that 2019 dark in all lighting.

WOO!

THE EYES HAVE HILLS

The New Central Library in downtown Calgary has gotten a lot of attention due to its stunning look and uniqueness. So today, Nate and I decided to walk down there.

It’s super cool!

Here are some bobbing things outside.

Here’s the inside.

01-12-2019-a

More inside!

01-12-2019-b

It’s such a cool space. I’m going to have to walk down there and spend some time in it if I ever get a spring or summer semester off.

Here’s a fantastic timelapse of it being built. I love timelapses.

I had no idea the C-Train went under that library. I’m dumb.

Edit: that time-lapse music is amazing. It’s now a Five-Star.

SCHOOOOOOOOOOOL

There was no actual teaching today, since I usually just take the first day of classes to go over the syllabus, expectations, due dates, etc., but it’s nice to be back in the swing of things.

I am both terrified and beyond excited for this calc class. We’ll see how things go.

It’s weird teaching a small section (120 students) of STAT 213, though, especially after having two sections of 240 students (plus 120 students for STAT 217) last semester.

Jesus, I had 600 students last semester. No wonder I had no time for anything else.

Hahaha, Jesus, YouTube…

There is no reason this should be as hilarious as it is, but it’s like 3 AM and I can’t stop laughing.

Primo comments:

  • Tainted Law
  • Tainted Love (Dick Wolf Remix)
  • I cant remember how the original sounds now help
  • I can only listen to this version of this song now thanks

Claudia’s Evening:

*puts on new Sennheisers*

*seeks music on YouTube*

*finds 30+ songs that she’ll have to obtain one per day for the next month or so*

Seriously. Not sure if it’s the headphones or just good luck in music finds, but I’ve got basically up through the next month covered for my Decade of Music project.

Spec it Out!

I got new glasses. Check em’ out!

01-08-2019

They don’t look too different from my old glasses, but they’re different enough that they warranted a blog post about them, so there ya go. They’re Valentino, hence the “V” in the middle.

(Awwww yeah, bathroom pics at school.)

WOO!

Talcum in the Middle

(THERE NATE I USED IT AS A BLOG TITLE, HAPPY NOW? Haha.)

I think I’m going to get off of Facebook for a while. It’s all cringy drama and people announcing pregnancies anymore. And I don’t give a crap about either of these things.

THE BLOGS ARE HERE

No, not the 300-some odd that I still have to post (I’m getting there, sorry). The Year 1 blog book that I ordered back in October.*

Totally worth the wait, too, check this nonsense out:

Time to do the rest of the years.

Yes, I know this seems super egotistical, making little booklets of my blogs. But my blogs are basically my diary, and if you were keeping a diary online, wouldn’t you like to have a physical copy of it just in case?

I would. Hence the booklets.

Now I just need to find space for them…

*It might have taken so long to get here due to the on-again-off-again postal strike up here, but who knows.

Physical Push

This is the most relatable, terrifying article I’ve ever read.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how maintainable this “15 miles a day six days a week” thing is. When will things start breaking down? Is this making me stronger or is it going to cause a whole ton of issues?

I’m terrified of the day where I can’t do these 15 miles a day anymore. Walking is really the only thing that keeps me calm, the only thing that keeps me from just absolutely hating every aspect of my existence. What’s going to happen when that’s taken away from me?

Decade of Music Project: A Task

ALRIGHTY, so as I’ve mentioned on here a few times recently, 2019 is the last year in my Decade of Music project, which means after December 31st of this year, I will no longer be “forced” to find and obtain a new song every day of the year.

And this, of course, means that at the end of this year, I’m going to be doing a huge review of the 3,560 or so songs I will have acquired since 2010.

So an additional task for this project this year is to make a sort of master list of all the songs since 2010 with their respective genres, lengths, stars, ranks, etc. so that I can make my final summary as accurate as possible. So far, I’ve got this:

01-04-2019

I’ve decided that on each day of the year this year, I’ll go back and enter information for each song I’ve downloaded on that day since 2010. So for example, today I’ll look at my January 4th song from 2010, my January 4th song from 2011, my January 4th song from 2012, etc.

It’s going to take a bit of time each day, but as long as I don’t get behind, I should have a nice comprehensive list of the last 10 years’ worth of music by the end of this year.

WOO I LOVE LISTS

I Knew I Liked Mike Posner

I liked his music before he became super well-known with “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” (which sounds like music snobbery—not trying to be snobby, just saying that I knew of him before that song). I didn’t know much about him as a person, but his music always came across as very genuine and full of a human vibe that a lot of music of his style doesn’t seem to have.

This is a very beautiful, relatable song that just makes me like him more.

Wow.

I love this.

Walking 2018

YOOOOOOOOOOO Happy New Year!

It’s January 1st yet again, so let’s do the thing I always do on January 1st and review last year’s walking stats.

Here they are for January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018.

Total number of walks: 338
Total mileage: 4,328.61
Total number of steps: 9,996,535
Total calories burned: 280,626
Total walking time (minutes): 71,430.14 [that’s about 49.6 days]
Average speed (mph) per walk: 3.71

4,328.61 miles is approximately the great circle distance between Dubai, UAE and Seoul, South Korea or between Rio Gallegos, Argentina and Caracas, Venezuela.

Let’s do better this year.

Claudia’s 366 Days of Music: Year 9 – A Review

2018: The Year Of Muse

Let’s do it.

Total songs: 365
Total time: 22 hours and 30 minutes
Total size: 2.68 GB
Mean song length: 4:10

The Five Stars
Listed in order of acquisition!
Peanut Butter Jelly by Galantis
Damn Son by Tobu
Something Human by Muse
Pressure (feat. the UCLA Bruin Marching Band) by Muse
Algorithm (Alternate Reality Version) by Muse

The five most beautiful/touching songs of the year:
Sense of Touch by Mark Isham
Algorithm (Alternate Reality Version) by Muse
The Blue Planet by Hans Zimmer
Ancestral Plane by Ludwig Goransson (from Black Panther)
With or Without You by April Meservy & Aaron Edson

The Overall Top Five
Pressure (feat. the UCLA Bruin Marching Band) by Muse
This is by far the best song of the year. I heard the original version of Pressure first and thought, “hey, this is really close to a Five-Star.” Then I heard this and immediately loved it. I love how the mood of the song completely changes with the marching band. Love the brass in the chorus. Love the drums. The whole thing is too cool for school. It’s my jam of the year.

Algorithm (Alternate Reality Version) by Muse
This is the most cinematic-sounding song I’ve ever heard that was not specifically written to be part of a score. It gets your heart pumping. It’s so freaking good.

Peanut Butter Jelly by Galantis
The chorus of this song is pure unadulterated joy. I can’t currently think of another song that evokes such an immediate mood boost as the chorus of this song. Listen to it with heavy-bass headphones and get an extra shot of happies.

Damn Son by Tobu
I think this is the second year in a row that Tobu has made the top five. I love the chorus, it makes you want to dance. Like I said last year, Tobu has really energetic songs.

Something Human by Muse
HEY LOOK IT’S MUSE AGAIN. I like how human (haha) the lyrics and meaning of this song are while there’s still so much electronic-ness to it. It’s like a robot who’s gained sentience and wants to be a human (like Bicentennial Man, which apparently is like the worst movie in the world according to a lot of people, but I really liked it!).

A PIE CHART!!*

12-31-2018

*I didn’t do a pie chart of playcounts by genre because everything kept getting reset as I burned through all those laptops this summer.

Moscow…Moscow Never Changes

  • People still blow at shoveling their sidewalks
  • The Palouse Mall still allows whoever shovels their parking lot to pile the snow on that outside sidewalk that goes the length of the mall to Walmart
  • Winco still has cheap as hell cheese and it’s fantastic
  • COLBY JACK CHEESE
  • Safeway doesn’t have pitas
  • There’s something kind of comforting/relaxing about walking in a small town compared to Calgary. I can basically get anywhere I want in about 45 minutes regardless of where my starting point is. The same definitely cannot be said about Calgary
  • No Chinook headaches!
  • The bus runs on Saturday now?!?!?!?!?

SPOKANE

WOOOOOOO SPOKANE TIME

Today my mom and I drove up to Spokane to go to that big mall up there (North Town? Something like that. I’m too lazy to look it up). We screwed around in there for several hours as always, bought too much stuff, then spent the evening watching nonsense on YouTube.

The Spokane visit is one of my favorite parts of my Moscow trips. Hanging out and going OMFG SHOPPING!!!1!!1 with my mom is always enjoyable.

Plus, there’s a comics/gaming store up there that sells individual Pokemon cards, and I don’t think I’ll be able to stop myself from trying to get a complete first gen collection next time we’re up there.

WOO!

More Leibniz Thoughts (Sorry Not Sorry)

So once again I’ve been thinking about Leibniz.

I never stop thinking about Leibniz, really, but sometimes I blog about it.

Anyway, I wonder what Leibniz’ thoughts would be on the internet. I suspect he would absolutely love the idea of it—free exchange of ideas, thoughts, opinions, and knowledge—but I wonder if he’d find it a distraction to our ability to create and come up with new ideas/knowledge or if he’d see it as something that fosters creativity and the cultivation of knowledge.

I think it goes both ways, but I do think that overall, the internet leads people to waste more time. I know that’s certainly the case for me and for a lot of other people I talk to, and I suspect that it’s worse for people who have had the internet (as we know it today—fast, huge, and accessible almost anywhere) around for their whole lives.

I just wonder how he would see it.

I also wonder if he would get super into things like Reddit or memes or YouTube. Maybe he’d end up getting a bit addicted to the internet like everyone else, haha.

Anyway.

HOT N’ HEAVY RESOLUTIONS MAYHEM

I am IN THE ‘SCOW!

And on a completely unrelated note, let’s do some resolutions.

First, a review of the 2018 resolutions:

  • ACCOMPLISHED: Blog-a-ma-thon. Did the blogs daily, but failed at posting them with any frequency whatsoever.
  • ACCOMPLISHED: Music-a-ma-thon. I only have one more year of this! I’m super excited.
  • ACCOMPLISHED: Walk 3,500 miles. It will be quite a bit more than this, but less than last year’s 5,100 miles. More to come on the 31st!
  • FAILED: Do at least one of the following: run in the Calgary Marathon or walk 100 miles in a 24-hour period. I kept busting up my leg. Also I suck.
  • ACCOMPLISHED: Win NaNoWriMo 2018. I almost quit like five times, but I didn’t.
  • FAILED: Write more. HA YEAH RIGHT WITH THIS FREAKING BUSY YEAR I BARELY HAD TIME TO BREATHE
  • FAILED: Another resolution that’s PRIVATE! The reason for failing is also PRIVATE!
  • FAILED: Be a better wife for Nate. I’m trying, but I’m also garbage, so.

2018 Resolutions:

  • The blogs.
  • The musics.
  • Get my music organized before the end of the year. After going through like twenty* different laptops last year, my music organization tanked. Gotta fix it.
  • Walk 4,000 miles. I had it set at 3,500 last year and that was TOO LOW BRO so let’s bump it up again. This is assuming I’m teaching all year. Let’s say 3,500 is the goal if I’m not teaching and have to get a different job. I HOPE THAT WON’T HAPPEN HOLY HELL
  • Get back to running 10k distances. I have no doubt from a muscular/cardiovascular standpoint that I can do a 10k. It’s mostly the injury that I’m afraid of re-aggravating. Also that runner’s knee that I gave myself a while back. But maybe both of those concerns won’t even crop up.
  • Win NaNoWriMo 2019.
  • Get my blogs in physical form. I’m not sure if my Year 1 is still going to get here or if it’s lost in the great Canadian wilderness that is the postal system up here, but I’d like to get it and every other completed year in hard copy form, preferably as soon as possible.
  • Write at least 500 words a day, 5 days a week, until my NaNoWriMo 2018 story is done. Then start editing it. I gotta do it, yo.
  • POST THESE GODDAMN BLOGS
  • Be. Better. For. Nate.

BRUH LET’S DO IT

*slight exaggeration
