Walking 2018

It’s January 1st yet again, so let’s do the thing I always do on January 1st and review last year’s walking stats.

Here they are for January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018.

Total number of walks: 338
Total mileage: 4,328.61
Total number of steps: 9,996,535
Total calories burned: 280,626
Total walking time (minutes): 71,430.14 [that’s about 49.6 days]
Average speed (mph) per walk: 3.71

4,328.61 miles is approximately the great circle distance between Dubai, UAE and Seoul, South Korea or between Rio Gallegos, Argentina and Caracas, Venezuela.

Let’s do better this year.

The Five Stars
Listed in order of acquisition!
Peanut Butter Jelly by Galantis

Something Human by Muse
Pressure (feat. the UCLA Bruin Marching Band) by Muse
Algorithm (Alternate Reality Version) by Muse

The five most beautiful/touching songs of the year:
Sense of Touch by Mark Isham
Algorithm (Alternate Reality Version) by Muse
The Blue Planet by Hans Zimmer
Ancestral Plane by Ludwig Goransson (from Black Panther)
With or Without You by April Meservy & Aaron Edson

The Overall Top Five
Pressure (feat. the UCLA Bruin Marching Band) by Muse
This is by far the best song of the year. I heard the original version of Pressure first and thought, “hey, this is really close to a Five-Star.” Then I heard this and immediately loved it. I love how the mood of the song completely changes with the marching band. Love the brass in the chorus. Love the drums. The whole thing is too cool for school. It’s my jam of the year.

Algorithm (Alternate Reality Version) by Muse
This is the most cinematic-sounding song I’ve ever heard that was not specifically written to be part of a score. It gets your heart pumping. It’s so freaking good.

Peanut Butter Jelly by Galantis
The chorus of this song is pure unadulterated joy. I can’t currently think of another song that evokes such an immediate mood boost as the chorus of this song. Listen to it with heavy-bass headphones and get an extra shot of happies.

Damn Son by Tobu
I think this is the second year in a row that Tobu has made the top five. I love the chorus, it makes you want to dance. Like I said last year, Tobu has really energetic songs.

Something Human by Muse
HEY LOOK IT’S MUSE AGAIN. I like how human (haha) the lyrics and meaning of this song are while there’s still so much electronic-ness to it. It’s like a robot who’s gained sentience and wants to be a human (like Bicentennial Man, which apparently is like the worst movie in the world according to a lot of people, but I really liked it!).

*I didn’t do a pie chart of playcounts by genre because everything kept getting reset as I burned through all those laptops this summer.

And on a completely unrelated note, let’s do some resolutions.

First, a review of the 2018 resolutions:

  • ACCOMPLISHED: Blog-a-ma-thon. Did the blogs daily, but failed at posting them with any frequency whatsoever.
  • ACCOMPLISHED: Music-a-ma-thon. I only have one more year of this! I’m super excited.
  • ACCOMPLISHED: Walk 3,500 miles. It will be quite a bit more than this, but less than last year’s 5,100 miles. More to come on the 31st!
  • FAILED: Do at least one of the following: run in the Calgary Marathon or walk 100 miles in a 24-hour period. I kept busting up my leg. Also I suck.
  • ACCOMPLISHED: Win NaNoWriMo 2018. I almost quit like five times, but I didn’t.
  • FAILED: Another resolution that’s PRIVATE! The reason for failing is also PRIVATE!
  • FAILED: Be a better wife for Nate. I’m trying, but I’m also garbage, so.

2018 Resolutions:

  • The blogs.
  • The musics.
  • Get my music organized before the end of the year. After going through like twenty* different laptops last year, my music organization tanked. Gotta fix it.
  • Walk 4,000 miles. I had it set at 3,500 last year and that was TOO LOW BRO so let’s bump it up again. This is assuming I’m teaching all year. Let’s say 3,500 is the goal if I’m not teaching and have to get a different job. I HOPE THAT WON’T HAPPEN HOLY HELL
  • Get back to running 10k distances. I have no doubt from a muscular/cardiovascular standpoint that I can do a 10k. It’s mostly the injury that I’m afraid of re-aggravating. Also that runner’s knee that I gave myself a while back. But maybe both of those concerns won’t even crop up.
  • Win NaNoWriMo 2019.
  • Get my blogs in physical form. I’m not sure if my Year 1 is still going to get here or if it’s lost in the great Canadian wilderness that is the postal system up here, but I’d like to get it and every other completed year in hard copy form, preferably as soon as possible.
  • Write at least 500 words a day, 5 days a week, until my NaNoWriMo 2018 story is done. Then start editing it. I gotta do it, yo.
  • Be. Better. For. Nate.
