It’s a survey. I BET YOU WEREN’T EXPECTING THAT, HUH?
When you wash your hands, do you use the cold or hot tap?
Depends on the ambient temperature. If it’s like 10000 degrees outside, I’ll use cold. If it’s freezing outside, I’ll wait until the water gets hot.
If you had to be straight/gay for a day (whichever you’re currently not!), what celebrity would you most like to take on a date?
Freaking crap, I don’t know. I don’t know any celebrities’ personalities, really, so I’d have to go by looks. Therefore, I pick Michelle Trachtenberg.
What is the biggest injury you’ve ever sustained and how did you do it?
Probably concussion #1. I was pretty young (younger than first grade I think) and I was climbing on the outside of a tall slide. My mom kept telling me not to, but I was a defiant little bugger and did it anyway. Then I fell off into the sand and got a pretty bad concussion.

What’s the most expensive gift you’ve ever bought for someone? How much did it cost and who was it for?
I have absolutely no idea.
Which 3 countries would you like to live in and why?
Germany. One word: Hanover.
Antarctica. Because I still really, really, really, really, really want to go down there. Though this gets rated lower than Germany ‘cause I have hesitations about causing environmental damage down there, especially considering the most feasible mode of transportation would be some sort of cruise ship.
Sweden. Because I’ve already been to Stockholm once and I really, really liked it.
If you could wake up tomorrow and be fluent in 3 additional languages, which would you choose?
French, German, Latin. Then I could read ALL THE LEIBNIZ!
(But does Latin count? If not, then Basque. )

A: Be good looking and extremely intelligent but so poor you live on the streets.
B: Be extremely intelligent and a millionaire but what society classes as ugly.
C: Be good looking and a millionaire but extremely academically challenged? Why?

Right here.
Would you rather raise 25 children or have the chance of ever having children taken away? Why?

This year has SUCKED, bro. Suckity Suck Suckerson McGee.

I have never been to a concert, how sad is that? However, some of the performers I’d like to see include Lady Gaga, Muse, Coldplay, and Dethklok.
OOH WAIT, I’ve seen Capitol Steps in concert, do they count?
(I forgot a title holy crap)
Do you like figuring out things yourself, or having instructions?
Depends on the task. Am I putting something together? I’d like instructions. Am I trying to figure out how something works, like a machine or some software or some interface thingy? Let me figure it out.
You just won $10,000; what do you do with all the money?
Give half to my mom, probably spend (most of) the rest of it on school.
Do you actually have a plan for the future, or do you go with the flow?
If I don’t have a plan, I kinda freak out.

Each cat gets about a five-minute greeting.
You’re home alone and someone knocks on your door; do you answer it?
No. Go away.

I brought my own like 99% of the time. I was the only first-grader who had beets for lunch.
Do your school pictures always look bad, or are they pretty good?

I’m actually 95% sure I’m getting one once I get to Calgary!

If you could work for any famous company, what would it be?
If Roosterteeth ever needs a statistician, I’m there, baby.

B BOOKS: What’s on your reading list?
THESE! I’d like to go back and read a book I really enjoyed, though. Like maybe Watership Down or The Ox-Bow Incident.
C COMPULSIVE about anything?
I like keeping records of things. Hell, that’s what this blog is for, right?
Another example: if I’m walking for “fun” and not just around campus or something, I need to be able to keep track of and record the number of steps I take. If my pedometer app malfunctions or something, I get really upset and the walk doesn’t “count.”
D DREAMS – Do you … dream in color? remember your dreams? keep a dream journal?
I definitely dream in color; often it’s a prominent feature of my dreams. I remember a fair amount of my dreams, I think, especially the ones that seem epic-length. The closest I get to keeping a dream journal is occasionally describing my dreams in this blog.
E EATING – what’s your usual snack?
I don’t really snack. I eat once (maybe twice) a day and probably 70% of it is broccoli.

[J IS MISSING! REPEAT: J IS MISSING! CALL A CODE BLUE!]
K Also KNOWN As… Aliases? Screen names? A nom de plume perhaps?
I don’t have any “real-life” nicknames, but my screen names include Eigenblogger (blogging), Nailpit (gaming), LadyLeibniz (other stuff), and AntarcticaFreak (mainly defunct)
L I LOVE …
Statistics. And math. But you need math to do stats, so…
M How do you feel about MEETING people? Do it all the time? Rarely? Parties or 1-on-1?

N What’s the story of your NAME? were you named after anyone? Do you go by a nickname? Any aliases?
My mom and dad had a few names picked out for me, but according to my mom, as soon as she saw me she knew I was a “Claudia.” And no, no nicknames.

The usual…Big Compy, the TV, the treadmill, the treadmill desk, a bunch of stuff everywhere ‘cause I’m in the middle of packing, and Annabelle.

Walk, read, draw, wander the internet, listen to music, obsess.

T What’s at the top of your TO DO list?:
Get stuff packed. And get an apartment.

V VEGAS, Vienna, Venice, Vladivostok… How far have you traveled? What’s your favorite city?
Furthest traveled: Stockholm, Sweden.
Favorite city: Gotta say Vancouver, sorry. Despite everything, I love it.
W WINTER, Spring, Summer, Fall… What’s your favorite season? What makes it special?
I like summer, but that’s mainly because summer is often too rainy for my taste, fall is a little too cold, and it’s hard to walk in the snow in the winter. Plus, in the summer it’s really nice to go walking at like 10 at night.
X EXes – Things you don’t do anymore (but did, once (would you, again?))
I used to be fairly judgmental of people…I really try not to do that anymore. I definitely wouldn’t want to go back to that.
Y Any secret/deep YEARNINGS?
Nothing that’s secret, haha.
Z ZERO to ZENITH – Where are you in your life? Still growing? On an upward (or downward) curve? Just skating along?
I never want to be “just skating along.” That would wreck me. Gotta be working towards something!
Anyway. I’d like to think I’m on an upward curve, but it sure as hell feels like it’s driving toward the center of the earth right now. BLAH.
Boredness
http://thoughtcatalog.com/amanda-berglove/2014/02/62-questions-to-ask-on-the-first-date/
So I found this link to a page listing 62 questions to ask on a first date.

Run while you can.
What three U.S. cities would you never, ever move to even for the job offer of your dreams?

What combination of fixings makes your perfect burrito?
Refried beans, ground beef, sour cream, and cheese. And that’s it.

Rock Band 2 was pretty freaking awesome, both because I was totally not expecting it and because it let the roomies and me keep pretending we were actual rock stars in an actual band and on an actual tour.
What is the most thoughtful gift you’ve ever given?
I don’t know, actually. I can’t currently recall any recent gifts I’ve given.

How many siblings do you have?
ZERO!
Do you consider yourself a morning person or a night owl?

Coffee sucks.

Mom: web designer at the U of I disabilities center.
Dad: soils/environmental science professor at the U of I.

What are two of your bucket list items?
End up in a job I really, really, really love. I know that’s kind of a weird bucket list item, but what the hell.
Visit Leibniz’ archives in Hanover. This could easily be combined with the previous item.

Do you have any specialty cooking dishes?
Apparently my scrambled eggs are pretty good, but other than that, no.
What is one job you could never do?
Due to physical limitations, I could never do a job that required me to rely on my sense of smell. But as for like personal preferences, I probably could never do a business/finance type job, just ‘cause I think it would make me insane. That’s NOT an area that interests me at all.

Depends on the time/day.

I wanted to be an artist for awhile. Then I wanted to be whatever I needed to be to work in Antarctica (I didn’t know what types of people worked down there).

If I say Leibniz’ biography, will you just run out on me? ‘Cause I’m gonna say it. Specifically the last chapter. He did not deserve such injustice!

If you just won $1 million, what would you do with it?

1. Are you a young heart or an old soul?
I’m a middle-aged spleen.
2. What makes someone a best friend?
4 AM conversations over Messenger about whether buying an island off of eBay is a financially responsible decision.
3. What Christmas present do you remember the most?
ROCK BAND 2 HOLY CRAP.
4. Tell me a movie that has changed your life.
I don’t know if it changed my life, but Sunshine is definitely my favorite movie at the moment.
5. Name one physical feature that you like about yourself and one that you dislike.
I like my nose. I dislike everything else.
6. Can money buy happiness?
It can help *find* the way to happiness sometimes. Example: money would get me to Hanover. Hanover implies LEIBNIZ ARCHIVES. Leibniz archives imply happiness.
7. What’s more important in a relationship: physical attraction or emotional connection?
I wouldn’t want a relationship devoid of either of those.
8. Is there anyone close to you that you know you can’t trust?
I don’t really trust anyone.

Uhhhh…how little are we talking? When I was ~7 I used to build little Claudia-sized “houses” out of construction paper and Scotch tape and live in those.
10. Have you spent a night in the hospital?
Ugh, let’s not go there, eh?

Sure. Sex ain’t no big concern for me.
15. Out of all the social networks in the world why use a blog?
MySpace is dead, Twitter is dumb, and Facebook ANGERS ME, so this is what’s left. I was also dared to start blogging back in 2006. Don’t ever dare me to do anything.
16. What is your quirkiest habit?
Uh…I have dinner at about 11 PM. Does that count?
18. Someone close to you is dying! You have the choice to let this person live for 10 more years but if you do you cause the death of 10 strangers.
I’d ask the person who was dying what they’d want me to do.
20. When you’re alone in your own home, do you talk out loud to yourself?
I probably talk more to myself than to all other people I know combined. I also sing about things Disney-style.

Slurvey
introduce yourself: Yo, I’m Claudia!
would you have preferred me to ask your name rather than demand it?: I don’t really care either way.
what is your personal feelings on manners?: I’m no Emily Post, but in settings where people are in fairly close contact with other people, manners are always a good thing.
do you have good or bad manners?: Depends on who you’re comparing me to.
do you believe that you can accurately judge your own manners?: I suppose.
have you seen a two dollar bill?: Indeed! I think I have one somewhere
have you listened to ellie goulding?: I have.
are you going swimming today?: HAHA no.
what color do you absolutely despise?: Red orange makes me nauseous. Which is funny, ‘cause I like red and I like orange.
is there anyone you want to kiss?: Yes, but he’s been dead since 1716.
can you kiss them?: See above.
would you ever take in an animal with special needs?: I probably wouldn’t right now, just because I don’t think I currently have the resources to take care of one. But later on, sure, if I had the money/resources.
do you prefer surveys with themes, or just random questions?: I prefer random questions.
anything important going on this week?: I just took a test in Stochastic Methods, but other than that, no.
are you a vegetarian? do you want to be?: Nope.
what’s holding you back from your current goal?: My being dumb.
what is your current goal?: I can’t say right now. Hopefully in a few weeks!
do you ever feel directionless?: I do right now, yes. That’s probably one of the worst feelings ever, isn’t it?
do you believe that it gets better?: No.
are you employed?: Yes! BEST JOB EVER!
do you enjoy being employed/not being?: I absolutely love my job. I just wish I could make it full-time…
what is one thing you wish you could change about the person closest to you?: My mom? I wish I could make her happy.
do you have siblings?: Nope.
have you ever wished you did/did not have siblings?: I made life-size paper people throughout 1st through 3rd grade and called each of them a sister, so yes.
what’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever named?: I name everything. At the house with the guys I named my Dasani bottle El Dasano. I wonder what ever happened to him…
if you could try any new food in the world right now, what would it be?: I’m not really into trying new food right now.
what food hybrid would you invent? (i.e. an orange crossed with a mango): Broccoli crossed with carrot, though that would probably be disgusting. Caroccoli. Broccolot!

what is one thing guaranteed to make you happy?: STATISTICS! And LEIBNIZ!

do you babysit? if so, age range?: Oh god no.
what age was your favourite? or has it yet to come?: I liked being 19 for some reason.
what social network do you use the most?: Does Tumblr count? If not, Facebook, I guess, but I never post anymore. Just stalk.
have you ever had to say goodbye to someone permanently?: Yes, quite a few times. It sucks.
I kinda mashed two surveys together
1. What would you pick as a major, if you could go back to college and do it again?
I did go back to college and do it again (or am doing it again, I guess). I picked math.
2. Who is the one celebrity with whom you would most like to have an in-depth conversation?
Leibniz. He’s a celebrity. YES HE IS, SHUT UP AND LET ME LIVE IN MY FANTASY WORLD.
3. If you could make a living doing ANYthing, what would that be?
Doing statistics, teaching statistics, writing, blogging, raving about Leibniz.
4. What’s your all-time very favorite dessert?
Peanut M&Ms. Yup, I’m classy like that.
5. How many pairs of jeans do you own?
Jeans are for squares.
(I’m a triangle)
6. What is your favorite flower, and why?
I’m not much of a flower person. I can’t smell them so that kind of takes away some of their appeal. Sunflowers are badass, though.
7. What book has most changed your life?
Candide, ‘cause it got me interested in philosophy, which took my education in a very different direction.
It also introduced me to Leibniz. There’s not too much else I can say about that. ;)
8. What is your least favorite vegetable? Is there any way you can be persuaded to eat it?
Celery is the most disgusting thing ever (texture-wise). You can eat a stick of it with a whole jar of peanut butter and it will still be terrible.
9. If you could take a nonstop first class flight to any destination, where would you pick to land?
Either Antarctica (South Pole please?) or Hanover (Leibniz’ archives, please?)
10. If your 15 minutes of fame included a stint on American Idol, what song would be your trademark solo?

Anastasia!

I choose a book by whether it’s on my list or not.
15. Where do you do most of your reading?
At the rec center on the recumbent bike.
16. Without looking, guess about how many books are in your TBR pile. Now look. Were you right?

17. How many movies on your TBW list?
I have no such list.
18. What’s your favorite genre of movie?
“Horribly Scientifically Inaccurate Disaster Movie”

[Blogger’s note: this one got lost somehow and never got posted when it was originally supposed to!]
What was your first job like?
My first “job” or my first actual paying job? My first “job” was working as an apprentice at Linda’s art camp over the summer. I could have gotten paid for it, but instead, Linda gave me the option of basically attending the camp for free (as in, getting to do all the art stuff that the campers were doing) in exchange for doing the apprentice work. So I did that.
My first job job was at Wendy’s. It was actually pretty fun. My manager was awesome and I liked working the closing shift.
It’s a typical Sunday, how are you spending it?
Either doing absolutely nothing productive (likely) or working on homework/projects/teaching prep.
What was the happiest day of your life?
My first college graduation (once I knew my GPA, haha). And one specific night in July in 2009…
What was the best decision you ever made?
Quitting UBC. I wouldn’t have gotten this amazing job if I hadn’t done that.
Tell us your go-to “pretend” game as a child.
Coos. All day, all the time.
What email service do you use?
Gmail and Outlook. I still have a Hotmail account out there somewhere, too.
What fandoms would you consider yourself a part of?
Metalocalypse, definitely. Would Achievement Hunter have a fandom? If so, Achievement Hunter.
Do you use anything on your lips? (e.g. Chapstick, gloss, balm, lipstick)
Vaseline. It’s the only stuff that really makes my lips feel better.
How many devices do you own which can access the internet?
Four: iPad, iPod, desktop compy, lappy compy.
Last strong smell you can remember smelling?
I’ve never smelled anything!
If you had to move your birthday to another date, which one would you choose and why?
I like my birthday. Though I guess being born on February 29th would be pretty cool.
Inspiration behind your blog title?
I can’t actually remember when or why I thought up “Eigenblogger.” It fits, though, don’t you think?
If you could spend a rainy day with anyone in the world, who would you choose and why?
Leibniz. Do I really need a reason? Really? Don’t you people know me by now?
Is there a foreign culture that you love?
Meh. I like different parts of different cultures.
Do you have a favorite soft drink?
Nope! Don’t drink ‘em.
Absolute Zero is a Government Conspiracy
Ever have those days where you’re just having the worst time ever for no good reason?
That’s today for me.
So you get an Achievement Hunter survey, ‘cause those guys always cheer me up and it’s my blog and I can do what I want so HA.

SurveyevruS
1. What do you think is the most unique thing about your generation?
It’s a more specific time span than the whole generation, but I think people born between, say, 1985 and 1995 are unique in the sense that they didn’t grow up with all this insane technology that we’ve got now (internet access everywhere, iProducts, big n’ fast computers, etc.) but we were young enough as these things were introduced to adapt to them in stride…or at least, more in stride than kids who grew up with the technologies already present. I think we’re lucky.
2. Do you speak out as often as you should?
Nope.
3. How often are you tough and unreasonable?
Not very often. I don’t like conflict.
4. Do you believe that sometimes you learn more from a failure than a success?
Well, I pretty much never succeed, so I guess I’d have to learn more from all the failures.
5. Do you feel that you always have to win?
It’d be nice, but I’m me, so it won’t happen.
6. Do you think tradition matters?
If it’s still meaningful to the people carrying out the tradition, yes.
7. Do you tend to root for the underdog?
Actually, no (at least in games/fictional situations). If there’s somebody who is on top/winning, I usually root for them to keep their streak going.
8. Have you ever felt that you want to exceed your parents’ successes?
Eh.
9. Of all the cartoon characters that you know of, which is most like you?
Tina from Bob’s Burgers, both in appearance and attitude towards butts.
10. What was the last event or situation that got you really excited?
School starting!!!
11. How old were you when you started working and what was your first job?
Are we talking like a technical job where I got paid with money? If so, I was 19 and worked at Wendy’s. If not, then I was like 13 or so when I worked at Linda’s Art Camp in exchange for free art supplies. That job rocked.
12. Tell us about your grandparents.
My grandpas are unfortunately both dead. My grandma on my mom’s side is evil. But my grandma on my dad’s side is still rockin’ in California.
13. Do you procrastinate or are you usually on top of situations?
I’ll answer this question later.
14. What would others say about you?
“AHHHHHHHHHH GET IT AWAY!!!”
15. Do you believe in life on other planets?
It’s out there somewhere.
16. When was the last time that you were called too thin?
PFFT. Never.
17. Do you work out? Have you ever joined a gym and quit almost immediately?
Yes. Though gyms are super boring now that I prefer walking 9+ miles at a time instead.
18. Do you feel that you utilize all your intelligence in every situation?
Haha, have you met me?
.gif of the Magi (pretty sure I’ve used this title before but WHATEV)
Do you want a gif-related survey today?
No?
WELL TOO BAD!

27th – How The Opposite Sex Sees You

26th – What Your Kids Will Be Like

(HAHAHAHA)

That’s coming up in a later blog!

6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?
A more consistent year.
7. What date from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I don’t think there’s any particular date that stuck out this year. It’s been up and down, but there weren’t any extremes.
That freaking Proofs study session was hilarious, though. That entire Tuesday, December 17th, was a fun day, now that I think back.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Teaching in Spring, Summer, and Fall, and then being told I get TWO sections this coming semester. WOO!
9. What was your biggest failure?
Haha, everything else?
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
NEVER I AM ZEUS
11. What was the best thing you bought?
The best thing I bought? Probably my replacement Hume shirt (my other one was really old and was getting holey).
14. Where did most of your money go?
Towards school.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The European Enlightenment. I mean, even more so than before. The Clockwork Universe helped with that.

No.
23. How many one-night stands?

Leibniz: An Intellectual Biography. It’s an incredibly thorough account of a remarkable human being. I highly recommend it (of course).
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I really, really, really love this song. You’ll hear more about this year’s music on the 31st, so I’m going to leave it at that for now.
28. What did you want and get?
A 4.0 for spring semester and a 4.0 for fall semester.
29. What did you want and not get?
I was hoping to get hired as a permanent employee at UI, but that’s not going to happen for several reasons (though I’m still hopeful!).
30. What was your favourite film of this year?
I’m pretty sure I haven’t seen a “new” movie this year (that is, a movie I haven’t seen before). So I’m saying Sunshine.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 25 and I honestly can’t remember what I did. I think I was still freaking out over my first calc II test and so I didn’t do anything exciting.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably satisfying?
Going to RTX would have been awesome. But I was teaching during that time anyway, so it wouldn’t have worked out even if I could have afforded it.

Man, I can’t choose! All of the awesome people in Linear and Proofs.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013:
Math majors are the dorkiest, most hilarious people ever.
I think we should rename Shoup Hall “Shoup da Whoop”
I’m so anxious I’m about to pee my pants. So you get a survey. A long one. Sorry.

It’s a tie between December 22, 2008 and July 25, 2009. That’s all the info you get.

Oooh. This is private. Very, very special, but private.
3. What’s your biggest regret? I know we all say we don’t regret things but obviously it’s how we learn, from our mistakes. So what’s something from your past you wished you could have changed?
I regret not taking more of an initiative in figuring out what I wanted to do with my life when I was younger. I wish I’d had a plan when I started college.

4. I’d be happy if I was even one inch taller.

Some of it’s good, some of it’s bad, just like all music.

Lows: making a lot of dumb mistakes.
21. What are your strongest beliefs?
I believe in treating everyone with respect and dignity and in being nice to others. We’re all just human beings, guys. Hate is such a waste.

My mom, definitely. And my kitten, but she hates me, haha.
23. How important do you think education is?
VERY IMPORTANT!

Metalocalypse. Especially now that we’re getting another season!

26. Name 5 people who are famous who you find attractive.
If dead people count, Leibniz. And only Leibniz.
If not, then the whole AH crew. I don’t care that there are six of them. I mean, look at these dorks:

27. Name your favorite movie and what it’s about.
Sunshine! It’s about our sun dying and a team of astronauts being sent into space to restart it with a nuclear bomb. It sounds really, really dumb, but it’s actually FANTASTIC. Trust me, bros.
28. Who is someone who fascinates you and why?
Leibniz. How can you NOT be fascinated by him, seriously? He (co-)invented calculus, he improved on Pascal’s calculator, he refined the binary system, he had the wig of 1,000 gods…what more do you want?!
29. What kind of person attracts you?
People who aren’t jerks to everyone. I also find people who have one or two super strong obsessions/passions very attractive.
30. What’s a problem that you have recently had or are currently having?
Trying to figure out what’s next. It’s not really a problem per se (yet), but it’s still bothering me that I don’t have a set-in-stone plan for the next few years.
31. Name something that you miss.
My sanity.
32. Share 5 goals you want completed in the next 30 days.
What is today, the 21st of November? Hmm…
1. Survive finals week (and by “survive” I mean “get a 4.0”)

Lowest point: this week. It’s just been super busy and crazy and…difficult.
34. What’s something that you’ve done in the past that you would never do again?
Something that no one should ever, ever do. I got karmic backlash for it, and I deserved every bit of it.
35. What is your biggest insecurity? why?
Being me. Because I’m me.
36. What were the last 3 songs you listened to and what did they mean to you?

Both my grandpas, yes.
39. What is your purpose in life?

Oh man, I have no idea. I try not to say nasty things to people. Though I do remember one particularly nasty fight I had with a friend in high school (which luckily only lasted like three days) during which I intimated that she’d been kicked off the cheerleading squad rather than just quitting. That doesn’t sound too bad, but the way I yelled it in front of the whole cafeteria was pretty bitchy of me.
48. What’s the nastiest thing anyone has ever said about YOU? Or something that’s hurt you above anything else and why?
[Insert pretty much anything my grandma on my mom’s side has said. But she’s dead to me now, so it doesn’t matter.]

When Aaron and I were going out, I went to Hawaii with the band for the beginning of Thanksgiving break and he was going home for the entire break, so we weren’t going to see each other at all that week. When I got back from Hawaii I found a vase of roses, a bunch of stuff from the dollar store (it was our special place, haha), and a super cute note saying that he couldn’t wait to see me again. It rocked.

Can I just say the whole year living with the guys in the house? That was an awesome year.

3. When I was in fourth grade I wrote this poem called “The Tart that Could Fart.” In the Christian school I attended, the word “fart” was pretty racy and thus my poem was not enjoyed by my teacher at the time. I remember a few days after I wrote it some older kid (I think his name was Greg?) went up to me and said that Sister Margaret (our principal) wanted to meet with me in her office and discuss the poem. I was 100% sure I was going to be expelled. Turns out this kid was making the whole thing up. He was forced to apologize and then pretty much hated me from that point onward.

Both, yo. Though quality probably wins out.
5. Is there a job/career you wanted but realized you couldn’t possibly do for one reason or another?
I used to really want to be a chef, but I realized I’d probably be horrible at it because of my anosmia and the fact that my sense of taste is a little messed up because of it. I think I could do it if I’d had a sense of smell/normal sense of taste at one point, but I never have, so yeah.
6. If you could live anywhere in the world or out of this world where would you live?

ELEVATORS GONNA ELEVATE
Book survey!
Favorite childhood book: A Fly Went By by Dr. Seuss (really young child), and Skinnybones by Barbara Park (older child) (freaking hilarious book, read it).
What are you reading right now? Leibniz: An Intellectual Biography by Maria Antognazza.
What books do you have on request at the library? I owe them like $200 still from last semester, so….nothing.
Bad book habit? I think I hold the Moscow record for most number of overdue books. And the record for the longest amount of time the books were overdue.
What do you currently have checked out at the library? Uh…I have The Remains of the Day still checked out as well as Philosophers at War, but I think I’ve had both of those checked out for so long that the UI library has deemed them “lost” and I think I own them now.
Do you have an e-reader? Nopers.
Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once? I really like to just focus on one book at a time. The way I read and the way I retain things, I tend to mash story lines/plots/characters together into one habitat in my brain. Not such a good thing when reading more than one book at a time.
Have your reading habits changed since starting a blog? Yes, I suppose, technically, since I started blogging just as college started and just as I had a lot less time to read for fun.
What is your reading comfort zone? I’ll take decent, well-written sci-fi (like Verne and Wells), but I will NOT touch romance or fantasy. Everything else is game.
Can you read on the bus? I couldn’t for the longest time, then I started taking hour-long bus commutes in Vancouver and the nausea disappeared. Reading commenced!
Favorite place to read? Probably on the bus, actually. Makes me feel like I’m doing something productive.
What is your policy on book lending? Nobody ever borrows books from me, so I don’t really know.
Do you ever write in the margins of your books? With non-fiction, yes.
Not even with text books? Oh gods yes.
What is your favorite language to read in? I can’t read in anything but English, ‘cause I’m stupid.
What makes you love a book? I’m much more of a character person than a plot person. If a book has no characters I can sympathize with/empathize with/love/hate, I won’t like it. I’ve also found myself automatically liking a book that can make my nether regions tingle with its use of prose. Lolita was a major, major example of this.
What will inspire you to recommend a book? See above.
Favorite genre? Classics?
Name a case in which hype ruined your reading experience: I remember before I’d read any Steinbeck I’d always heard people say “ZOMG STEINBECK MAKES SUCH SEXY WORDINGZ LOLZ” and then I tried to get through Grapes of Wrath and I wanted to shoot myself in the face. I cannot handle his style.
If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you choose? Freaking Latin or French, bro.
Most intimidating book you’ve ever read? I think War and Peace was intimidating just because of its sheer size. Plus I was like 13 when I read it. More recently was probably either Dr. Zhivago, just because Pasternak’s writing style is like “I’LL EAT YO FACE!”
Most intimidating book you’re too nervous to begin? Joyce’s Ulysses. I’ve…heard things about that book.
Favorite fictional character? Phileas Fogg. Captain Queeg. Jay Gatsby. Ivan from The Brothers Karamazov. Ozymandias from Watchmen.
Favorite fictional villain? Does Captain Queeg count as a villain?
Name a book that you could/would not finish: Anything Steinbeck. Blaughdfhsgh.
What distracts you easily when you’re reading? My own thoughts.
How often do you skim a book before reading it? I read the first few paragraphs. If they’re engaging, I check it out! I try not to read the blurb ‘cause I don’t want to know what it’s about past the first page.
What would cause you to stop reading a book half-way through? Either disliking it immensely or getting super busy.
Do you like to keep your books organized? They are ordered from smallest in height to tallest in height. ‘Cause that’s the aesthetic I like.
Name a book that made you angry: Atwood’s A Handmaid’s Tale. The ending made want to stab people because it was so perfect up until like the last five pages and then it just tanked for me.
A book you didn’t expect to like but did? Clark’s The Ox-Bow Incident. I started reading it (without knowing anything about it) and was like, “oh. A Western.” But then it got amazing. Brilliant book, yo.
A book that you expected to like but didn’t? The Sun Also Rises. I love Hemingway, but this book just wasn’t doing it for me.
Favorite guilt-free, pleasure reading? Smutty fan fiction, man. The further from canon, the better.
