French Erotic Film
Yesterday’s delve into old Flash animations that I enjoyed as a youth brought back the memory of the incredible “Colin Mochrie vs. Jesus H. Christ” trilogy.
If you have never seen this before, you are now commanded to watch it.
I can sing all those lyrics from memory. I have all three of these songs and anytime I hear them I sing those lyrics.
Frontier
So I was pretty sure I’d mentioned this song on here somewhere at some point, but I searched my archives and found NOTHING, so I present to you The Avalanches’ “Frontier Psychiatrist.”
This song is a trip.
I first heard it in a Clock Crew Collab like 17 years ago:
Man, that brings back memories. Wanting to be a part of the Clock Crew was one of my main motivators for learning (or trying to learn) Flash.
RIP Good Winter Coat
So y’all know that orange coat that I brought way back when I moved here in 2014? The one that cost like $5 at Goodwill but has gotten me through eight hellish Canadian winters?
Yeah, he dead.
The zipper finally decided to BE FREE and, in my haste to repair it (since it’s still hella cold here), I made it so it couldn’t be anything BUT free and now it doesn’t zip at all.

So that blows.
But hey…eight years is a long time for me to have an article of clothing in which I walk. I am SUPER destructive with my walking clothes. You can see how bleached out this coat is. And it’s got a big hole in the back from thousands of miles of rubbing against my backpack.

RIP buddy, you were my warm winter friend.
Now I have to get a new coat before next winter, haha.
FIRST DAY OF BASEBALL YES LET’S GET IT SCHERZER
God I missed baseball. Everything is better during baseball season, and I have a feeling the Mets are going to do well this year.
(Edit from October: um…well…)
Is it drafty in here?
Nate’s Yahoo! fantasy baseball group needed one more member to get to an even number of players, so Nate got permission from the group to add me. Today was our draft! Here are my dudes:
Hitters:
- Ozzie Albies
- Javier Baez
- Charlie Blackmon
- Mark Canha
- Nick Castellanos
- Nelson Cruz
- Freddie Freeman
- Joey Gallo
- Adolis Garcia
- Jonathan India
- Starling Marte
- Anthony Rendon
- Carlos Santana
- Will Smith
- Dansby Swanson
- Chris Taylor
- Christian Yelich
Pitchers:
- Yu Darvish
- Max Fried
- Kenley Jansen
- Tyler Malhe
- Adam Ottavino
- Blake Snell
- Marcus Stroman
Let’s see how the season goes!
Edit: HOW DID I FORGET TO DRAFT MCNEIL?? Added him later, though.
Edit again: McNeil did not disappoint!
r/place
So if you don’t know what r/place is, here’s some history and info. In 2017, this particular subreddit was home to an experiment that involved a blank online canvas, a limited color palette, and collaboration. Basically, registered users had the ability to place a single colored pixel on the canvas (and had to wait a certain amount of time to place another). People coordinated with each other, fought each other for space on the canvas, and produced overall a very cool looking image by the end of the event.
Fast forward to now. It’s 2022 and there was a new version of r/place with a bigger canvas, more colors, and more collaboration.
ANYWAY.
The reason I’m mentioning this is because the r/ucalgary subreddit was all about trying to get the U of C logo on there. But in the process, they kept bringing up the Canadian flag and how NO ONE COULD DRAW THE MAPLE LEAF. And how Germany drew a perfect maple leaf on their flag just to show that they could do it.
Edit: Here’s a video showing the evolution of the Canadian flag and how terrible that leaf was. Like, oh my god, guys.
That’s hilarious.
Edit again: here’s a really cool video giving a much better description than I can and showing how the canvas evolved:
I love this kind of stuff. It’s so cool.
Sane Clown Crew
What did you dissect in high school?
Cow eyeballs, cow lungs, sheep brains. We did a squid in elementary school.
In what non-bathroom places have you relieved yourself?
I have two designated peeing bushes on my walking routes. That’s what happens when they take the porta-potties away in the winter.
When you first understood the concept of sexual intercourse, what did you think of it?
I don’t remember. That was also elementary school. We were just probably taught that it was a SIN unless it was between two married people who were doing it to procreate.
If you’re a neat person, what’s something you’re messy about? If you’re a messy person, what’s something you’re neat about?
I don’t know which one I am. My stuff is either 100% messy or 100% clean. I don’t like anything in between.
What did you like best about high school geometry (the subject, not the teacher, classmates, or whatever)?
I actually really liked doing the proofs. They were fun. My teacher (Mrs. Loomis) was also pretty great.
What item at a salad bar gets you the most excited?
Olives are pretty freaking great.
Do some brands of bottled water taste better than others?
Most bottled waters taste the same to me. There’s one brand that tastes really “flat” with a bad aftertaste, but I can’t remember the brand off the top of my head.
If you could be employed in one of the technical jobs in film-making, what would you choose?
Does editing count? I’d love to be the editor.
How do you feel about couples (married or dating) having joint email accounts or joint Facebook accounts?
Eh. The thing that bugs me the most about couples on Facebook is when couples post daily “I luv my partner lol” posts. It always strikes me as contrived, with the goal being mainly to show off and/or get people to praise them. It’s great that you love your partner, but…why not just tell them that in private instead of needing to brag about it all the time?
Which character from The Wizard of Oz do you best relate to?
Tin Man, probably.
Y’ALL LIKE FLAGS????
I DO!!!!
I love this kind of stuff.
For some reason, I’d always thought that Canada had one of the rarer aspect ratios for flags, but I guess the US’s is rarer.
Nepal’s like “fuk yo rectangles.”
El Salvador’s like “fuk yo common denominators.”
Price TAG YOU’RE IT
This is a super interesting and informative list. I’m sure we’ve all been aware of some of these strategies, but probably never considered a few of them.
Gameage
Want some fun text-based, multiple-choice games? Check these out.
I found this via “Choice of the Dragon,” but I’m enjoying “Choice of Broadsides” a lot.
Purch
HERE’S CRAP I WANT TO BUY
I DON’T EVEN CARE ANYMORE
James Webb Space Telescope earrings
Another thermal case for another one of my electronics
Intel
I like doing these tests even though I usually know what the outcome is going to be. And even though, in this case, the idea of “multiple intelligences” has pretty much been debunked (at least in terms of matching people with different “learning styles”).

Pepper Pictures: March Edition!
Here’s another set of bi-monthly (-ish) pictures of Pepper, because she’s always posing and I’ve always got my phone ready to take her picture.
Big yawn!

She’s so beautiful.

Sink time!

Hahahaha.

HAHAHAHA.

Beauty queen.

She can basically flatten her hips completely down, haha.

Floor time!

Got Class?
Heeeeey, so we got our (tentative) teaching assignments for the upcoming academic year and it looks like I’m teaching a new class! It’ll be MATH 275: Calculus for Engineers and Scientists.
Yes, I’ve taught calc before, but not this specific class. So I’m counting it as new. Exciting!
I’m also coordinating STAT 213, which will be my first time coordinating in person.
Long Day’s Journey into Fright
SHOCK! A survey. Are you SHOCKED?
1. Is there someone you’d like to be kissing right now?
If there was anyone, it’d be my husband. But I don’t feel like the kissy kissy at the moment.
2. When you’re being extremely quiet, what does it mean?
I’m absorbed in a selected one of my nine or ten fantasy daydreams where everything is as fantastic as I want it to be.
Or I’m sad.
Or I’m angry.
One of the above.
3. What are you listening to right now?
The wind outside.
4. Are you a big fan of thunderstorms?
I LOVE thunderstorms. We get so many of them up here in ‘Berta. We never got them in Moscow very often.
5. Do you believe in perfect?
I believe in the subjectiveness of perfection.
6. Are you a jealous person?
Yes. Not going to deny it.
7. What was the first thing you thought this morning?
“KIIIIIIIIIIIILL MEEEEEEEEEEE”
8. What do you think about when you are falling asleep?
Bro, I fall asleep in like a nanosecond. I go into REM sleep immediately. No time for conscious thought.
9. Are you satisfied with what you have in life?
Sure.
10. Do people ever think that you’re either older or younger than you actually are?
A few years ago I was walking by one of the high schools here in town. It was under construction and the whole front was blocked off. An older lady passing the other direction asked me if I went to the school and what was being done to it. I was over 30 at the time, so…
11. Do you think men truly understand women?
Nobody understands anyone, man.
12. How about women understanding men?
See above.
13. Did anybody ever call you handsome or beautiful?
Nate does, but I think that’s just out of obligation. I am NOT beautiful.
14. What is one fact about the last person that called you?
She is the best mom in the world! Yes, that is a fact, haha.
15. Other than your current one, tell us about the longest relationship you have had either a romance or a particular good friend.
In terms of romantic relationships, my longest one was probably with Aaron. Nine months. Not very long, hahaha.
NEW WEEZER??? ? ?
So I’ve gotten into Weezer as of late, as their OK Computer album had STRINGS and their Van Weezer album had ROCK and I like a lot of their other songs too.
ANYWAY.
It sounds like their new project is called SZNZ. They’re going to release an EP for each season this year.
And since Spring just began on Sunday, their spring EP has released! Check it out here:
A Little Bit of Love is great. Angels on Vacation is good too.
EXCUSE ME, HANS ZIMMER…
What gives you the right to make the Interstellar soundtrack so frisson-inducing?
What gives you the right.
Nate and I watched Interstellar the other night. It was the first time either of us had seen it. The movie itself was quite good, but the soundtrack?
HOLY.
GALACTIC.
BALLS.
BATMAN.
It’s Hans Zimmer, so of course it’s going to be good, but JEEBUS.
I listened to the following song (No Time for Caution) on my cheap-ass $5 walking headphones and I got frisson so badly at the 2:35–minute mark that I felt it in my groin.
The STRINGS. They BURN SO GOOD.
I’d heard Mountains before ever watching the movie, but No Time for Caution is so much better.
HNNNNNNNG.
Periodic
Remember that “Periodic Table of Academic Disciplines” blog post that I made like 300* years ago?
That blog post gets an insane amount of views compared to my other posts. The table itself has been used in quite a few things, too.
Here (slide 4)
Here (slides 8 and 9)
A blog post about it
Kinda cool.
*Ten. It was ten years ago.
