Claudia’s Evening:

*puts on new Sennheisers*

*seeks music on YouTube*

*finds 30+ songs that she’ll have to obtain one per day for the next month or so*

Seriously. Not sure if it’s the headphones or just good luck in music finds, but I’ve got basically up through the next month covered for my Decade of Music project.

I Knew I Liked Mike Posner

I liked his music before he became super well-known with “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” (which sounds like music snobbery—not trying to be snobby, just saying that I knew of him before that song). I didn’t know much about him as a person, but his music always came across as very genuine and full of a human vibe that a lot of music of his style doesn’t seem to have.

This is a very beautiful, relatable song that just makes me like him more.

Claudia’s 366 Days of Music: Year 9 – A Review

2018: The Year Of Muse

Let’s do it.

Total songs: 365
Total time: 22 hours and 30 minutes
Total size: 2.68 GB
Mean song length: 4:10

The Five Stars
Listed in order of acquisition!
Peanut Butter Jelly by Galantis
Damn Son by Tobu
Something Human by Muse
Pressure (feat. the UCLA Bruin Marching Band) by Muse
Algorithm (Alternate Reality Version) by Muse

The five most beautiful/touching songs of the year:
Sense of Touch by Mark Isham
Algorithm (Alternate Reality Version) by Muse
The Blue Planet by Hans Zimmer
Ancestral Plane by Ludwig Goransson (from Black Panther)
With or Without You by April Meservy & Aaron Edson

The Overall Top Five
Pressure (feat. the UCLA Bruin Marching Band) by Muse
This is by far the best song of the year. I heard the original version of Pressure first and thought, “hey, this is really close to a Five-Star.” Then I heard this and immediately loved it. I love how the mood of the song completely changes with the marching band. Love the brass in the chorus. Love the drums. The whole thing is too cool for school. It’s my jam of the year.

Algorithm (Alternate Reality Version) by Muse
This is the most cinematic-sounding song I’ve ever heard that was not specifically written to be part of a score. It gets your heart pumping. It’s so freaking good.

Peanut Butter Jelly by Galantis
The chorus of this song is pure unadulterated joy. I can’t currently think of another song that evokes such an immediate mood boost as the chorus of this song. Listen to it with heavy-bass headphones and get an extra shot of happies.

Damn Son by Tobu
I think this is the second year in a row that Tobu has made the top five. I love the chorus, it makes you want to dance. Like I said last year, Tobu has really energetic songs.

Something Human by Muse
HEY LOOK IT’S MUSE AGAIN. I like how human (haha) the lyrics and meaning of this song are while there’s still so much electronic-ness to it. It’s like a robot who’s gained sentience and wants to be a human (like Bicentennial Man, which apparently is like the worst movie in the world according to a lot of people, but I really liked it!).

A PIE CHART!!*

12-31-2018

*I didn’t do a pie chart of playcounts by genre because everything kept getting reset as I burned through all those laptops this summer.

Mash

DJ Earworm’s mashup didn’t really make me too excited about this year’s music. But this mashup by AnDyWuMUSICLAND certainly does.

I love how all mashups have such different sounds and takes on the songs within them.

Muse omfg

This thing is a cinematic experience all on its own. I have never heard a song like this that wasn’t specifically written for a movie.

Like…holy hell. Get some good headphones on and crank this. The original version of this song is good, but this is on a whole other level.

I am literally freaking crying, it’s beautiful.

United State of Pop: 2018 Edition

The mashup is here!

It’s…okay.

I’d probably like it more if I recognized more of the songs. I wasn’t really “hip to teh soundz” of 2018 compared to previous years.

Don’t want to diminish Earworm’s talent, though. It’s a good mashup, it’s just one I don’t “recognize,” if that makes sense.

In fact, the only song I could recognize was This Is America. Seriously.

I probably know some of the others, but not in mashup form.

I do like the look of a lot of the music videos, though…I’ll have to give ‘em a watch and see if I like the corresponding songs as well!

MUSEic

I have no other songs apart from that Muse song.

I have never had any other songs apart from that Muse song.

I have nothing to do except listen to that Muse song on repeat for several hours.

Muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse.

OH NO THEY DID NOT

MUSE ARE YOU FOR REAL

This gives the song and entirely different feel and it’s fantastic, holy hell.

This is the best thing I have ever pumped into my ears. Jesussssss.

Hallow

Oh, my. What a catchy song.

Have a few more (mostly for the music videos). Happy Halloween!

Every sponge cake is a waterfall

Holy hell.

  1. That guy sounds so much like Freddie.
  2. This is the only version of this song that rivals the original.
  3. The tone change caused by the Queen style is chilling.
  4. AAAAAAAAA I LOVE IT

Postmodern Jukebox is a gift we do not deserve.

Sleepyhead Remix: A Forgotten Happy

So as I’m sure many of you know, I’m all about the Sleepyhead remixes. I have approximately 25 or so of them.

Well, I just re-discovered this one and forgot how good it was. Check it out:

Love that violin chorus.

AAAAAAAA

Remember that post about the Theremin that I made a few weeks ago? Hear it in Debussy form!

This is really beautiful.

Ha, Nice

I like this.

(Sorry, I have nothing interesting to say, as per usual.)

Harry Potter and the What the Fuck is This

I stumbled upon this video on the YouTubes and was like “WHAT IS THIS WIZARDRY?!?!?!” so I had to look it up.

The thing she’s playing is called a Theremin. Named after its inventor, Leion Theremin, it’s played without any actual physical contact with the instrument.

The box in the middle contains radio tubes that produce oscillations that are at sound wave frequencies above what humans can hear. When the two waves combine, they produce a lower, audible frequency.

The two antennas are sensitive to where the player’s hands are: one antenna controls the pitch and the other the volume. Moving one’s hands towards/away from either of these antennas alters the inaudible frequencies.

Another cool vid by the same lady:

I WANT ONE

(A Theremin, not the lady, haha. Though she’s super talented!)

Oh wow

If there’s one thing that my Decade of Music project has taught me, it’s that there is no genre of music that I absolutely hate. I still have preferences, but my openness to things that I had previously considered “not my style” has increased greatly. For example, this song:

Years ago, I probably wouldn’t have listened past the first 30 seconds or so. Now I’m super into this song. It’s so layered and detailed. It sparks some weird nostalgia in the back of my brain that I can’t quite place. Maybe it sounds like a song my mom would have played back when I was a kid? Maybe it’s that soprano sax. That’s a very nostalgic sound to me for some reason. Not sure why.

Maybe I am Kenny G’s child?!?!?!

But man, this is a groovy song.

A Music

A cover of a pop song? Check. One of the sexiest sounds I’ve ever heard at 2:13? Check.

Love it.

KILLAHS

I’ve been super into The Killers lately. I’ve realized that their songs (a lot of them at least) have such an interesting, distinct tone to them…kind of like a frantic, nervous yearning behind the lyrics and music. It’s really interesting and really good.

Current favorite songs:

Moosic

YO, I love Rob Scallon and this was super interesting to watch. Check it out.

The Real Prince of Denmark

Blame a crossword puzzle for this buffoonery. I was going to do the whole song, but I guess I just crashed on the couch and didn’t finish anything but the first main verse thingy.

I’m a rock star.

(Sung to the tune of “The Real Slim Shady” by Eminem).
May I have your attention please?
May I have your attention please?
Will the real Prince of Denmark please stand up?
I repeat, will the real Prince of Denmark please stand up?
We’re going to have a problem here

Y’all act like you never seen a dead father before
Lyin’ on the floor, an uncle with poison runnin’ out the door
Started rulin’ the country worse than before, Hamlet thought he was bored
But he’s just melancholy

It’s the return of the “To be, or not to be, woe is me,
Horatio didn’t just see a ghost, did he?”
And Ophelia said…
Nothing you idiots, Ophelia’s dead, she drowned after goin’ mad!

Also, I just realized how freaking long the original song is.

Crab Rave

Heh. I dig it.

MUSE, STOP

Oh.
Oh.

Well this is a five-star.

It’s been a while since a song has made me cry. This song made me cry. Not sure why, but it did.

Oof, so good.

NNNF

Can I inject this song into my veins?

Please?

God, I love his voice.

Everybody knows…

I saw this very short little clip of a dude dancing and singing “everybody knows shit’s FUCKED” somewhere on Tumblr a little bit ago:

Had that little clip stuck in my head, so I had to find the full song. Now I have the full song stuck in my head.

New anthem of the US. You’re welcome.

Weezer, I am Disappoint

There’s nothing wrong with this song, but as a cover, it’s…kinda boring.

And I like Weezer. I like a lot of their songs (favorites include Beverly Hills, Feels Like Summer, Pork and Beans, and Say It Ain’t So). But this just feels so bland. I get that they probably wanted to stay close to the feel of the original because people would likely freak out if Toto was tampered with, but I think you could still get the same vibe across while still making the song different rather than basically just copying everything.

Just my two cents, ’cause what do I know?
