French!
My second class of French started today!
There’s a much broader range of French experience in this class compared to the first one. Some students had French immersion in school; others of us took the intro French class and that’s all we’ve had so far.
It’s intimidating! But I’m ready to learn.
NO BUT SERIOUSLY IT’S COLD YO
Oh my god.
OH MY GOD.
So this was the temperature when I headed into campus this morning.

No, I didn’t walk in (though I thought about it, haha). Instead, I took the bus.
Here is the scene from the bus stop in front of our house. Doesn’t the air look frozen?

Anyway. Took the bus in but decided to actually take it down to Brentwood Mall ‘cause I needed groceries. It’s about 0.36 miles from the Fresh Co there to the math building, so I figured walking back to campus after getting groceries wouldn’t be too bad.
Ha.
Have you ever been outside in feels like -53? It’s colder than anything I’d ever experienced, that’s for sure. Like, -40 is cold. But dropping it another 13 degrees? Ouch.
Ouch.
Needless to say, I took the bus home after I was done with work. I was actually surprised at how many students were in my afternoon class given how cold it was.
Edit: there’s ice on the inside of the Kines building doors. Freaking brr.

It’s Cold, Yo
Every year we get like two two-week periods of absolute hellish cold. Usually one of these periods overlaps perfectly with winter break (end of December-ish) and the other happens sometime around he start of Winter semester (mid-January).
We didn’t really have much of a cold snap in December, but HOLY HELL it’s cold right now.
We’re talking “feels like” temps in the -40s.
And it’s just going to get colder of the next few days!
What is with people and beverage containers?
Seriously. It’s a thing.
We laugh and roll our eyes, but if you’re from my generation, you can’t deny that a big portion of your coolness factor in high school was the color combo of your Nalgene bottle and cap and how utterly covered in stickers that thing was.
(I had no stickers on mine. I was not cool.)
Also, you know that if social media had been a thing back then, it would be exactly as bad as it is with the Stanleys.
My TOENAILS
So the toenails on my right foot are now starting to turn all black and gross and twisted. Will they get as bad as the toenails on my left foot?
Only time will tell!
Am I going to keep blogging about my insanely disgusting toes?
Only time will tell!
(Yes. Yes I will.)
Analog
Today was the final exam for MATH 275 (Engineering Calculus). Because of the large class size of 1,000+ students, the exam was held in the gym rooms where each room holds several hundred students in desks arranged in a big grid.
Because the gyms are so large and the wall clocks so small, a large clock (2 feet in diameter maybe?) is placed at the very front of the gym so that students can easily see what time it is as they write the two-hour exam.
This clock is an analog clock.
For the first time since starting work at the University of Calgary, I had some students who did not know how to read an analog clock.
A few came up to the front to sign out for the restroom. The sign-out sheet asks for the time they’re signing out (and the time they’re signing in). There were two students who looked at the big clock when filling out the sign-out time and were very clearly unsure of how to read it. I had to tell them the time. Another student looked at the clock and then immediately looked at their watch instead, which showed a digital clock face.
This seems like an odd skill to lose. Like, don’t most elementary/junior high/senior high schools have analog clocks in every classroom? Ours always did. Or maybe students just don’t ever look at those because they’ve got their phones and/or watches with a digital face.
I’m not passing judgement or anything, it’s just interesting.
Color Palette
Y’know what? I’m not mad at it.
I still have my standard favorites when it comes to colors (orange, lime green, yellow, red, mainly), but I think my enjoyment of non-standards has broadened over the past several years.
Like…I used to really dislike neon. I like bright colors and always have, but bright rich colors, not neon. But I really started to dig neon around the end of 2019 or so.
Same thing with pastels. I’m still not a huge fan, but I’ve grown very fond of mint and lavender (that’s why I wanted an iPhone 12 – I wanted that lavender color!).
So peach fuzz? Definitely not a color I would choose as a favorite or to wear, but I appreciate it.
The end.
Duolingo: 2023 Review
So my efforts in studying French via Duolingo fluctuated a lot this year due to fluctuations in how busy I was, but I tried to stay consistent with at least doing one lesson a day. Here’s my year-end summary:

I think the combination of the French class(es) and Duo is a really good one. Duo is great for vocab and basics; the French class(es) help with the nuances of the language.
Can’t wait to learn more!
Pride
Love flag design? Love the pride flags? Check this out:
This is super cool. I love the idea of a “shared visual language” to try to bring cohesion to the flag designs. Even just a consistent color palette, as some of the comments suggest, could be something to unite all the different flags.
Of course, the history behind the flags and the chosen colors still needs to be taken into account (and I know next to nothing about said history for most of the flags), but it’s still an interesting idea.
Edit: an updated vid!
Christianity: WTF Are All These Denominations?
So as many of you probably know by now, I went to a Catholic elementary school. I went to church approximately twice a week (once on Fridays with the rest of the school and once on Saturdays with my dad) and was even an altar server. Despite this, though, I couldn’t tell you the difference between, say, what Catholics believe and what Presbyterians believe.
So this little video was super interesting to me:
I can vouch for the “YOU GOTTA DO THE CHURCH STUFF BRO” thing with Catholicism. It was very heavily pushed in our religious studies that you needed to be a part of the church OR ELSE.
TWO THINGS TODAY
First: Nate’s surgery went well! He and his mom got back around 5 or so this evening and he’s doing a lot better than either of the previous two surgeries already.
Second: I got an email from IRCC Canada giving me a notice to take my citizenship oath! It will be over Zoom on Thursday, November 30.
That’s wild. I’ll be an official Canadian citizen in a few weeks!
THREE THINGS TODAY
First: I did my longest run ever this morning: 27.2 miles. I also did my fastest marathon time of 4:15. That’s still really slow, but it’s fast for me.

Second: Nate’s mom came up to take him to Canmore for his surgery. They should be back tomorrow afternoon. I hope everything goes well!
Third: I made layer cookies!

The end.
The Great Purge
I have trouble getting rid of stuff.
This includes stuff that is no longer of practical use, like my dozens of old Kinvaras that I’ve worn down with 500+ miles each.
But there are too many old pairs in the house; they’re really starting to clutter up the back room where Pepper’s litter box is (and the recycling bins and the furnace and the water heater), so I finally (with a lot of prompting by Nate) had to get rid of them today.
Here is a picture of them all before the purge:

That’s 45 pairs of shoes. You can see Pepper sitting next to the pile for scale, haha.
Now it’s time to start a new pile!
Flashback
Today I did something that I have not done since 2019: I walked to Westbrook Mall.
More specifically, I walked the route that used to be my absolute favorite walking route. I’d go out into Bowness and then come back, pass the bottom of our hill, and then walk on to 14th street. I’d then walk down 14th street to 17th avenue and head up towards Westbrook Mall. From there (usually after some shopping at the Walmart and/or Safeway) I’d take the #9 bus either home or to campus, depending on what I was doing the rest of the day.
Because of my class schedule in Winter 2020, I didn’t get a chance to do that walk before Covid hit.
And then Covid hit, which meant malls and buses were FORBIDDEN for quite a while.
But today, I finally got the chance (and courage) to give that walk another shot. Made sure I had my N99 for the bus back (plus like ten backup masks because I’m a weirdo like that) and headed up there.
It was a GREAT walk. I LOVE that walk.
And taking the bus back (to campus) wasn’t that bad, either. I was afraid I’d get motion sick because it has been so long since I’ve ridden a bus, but I was fine.
WOO!
500 Days!
Check it, I just hit 500 days on Duo!

Here are some examples of the level of French I can comprehend at this point:

I’m excited for my second French class this coming winter!
Spooky Run
So I’m not one to be afraid of the dark or anything like that.
But when it’s 5:30 AM on a cold Halloween morning and you’re out in the part of Bowness Park where there is not a light to be seen save your one little headlight on your running vest, hearing people describe their creepy ghost stories over the radio is NOT WHAT YOU NEED AT THAT MOMENT.
Imagine being in the woods in complete darkness except for a tiny little light in front of you and you hear someone describe that as a child, they would often see a man standing outside their bedroom window at their family’s summer cabin, peering in with unblinking eyes, but when they finally told their parents about this mysterious man, their parents informed them that their bedroom was on the second floor.
I got goosebumps at these stories, yo.
At least they made me run faster.
What am I supposed to do with my toenails?
What are these?

What even are these?
Look at that middle one. It’s got layers.
D I S G U S T I N G.
Ames Window
So here’s a cool optical illusion for you:
I feel like I’ve seen this before, but maybe not. I can get the pen illusion to break pretty easily, but maybe that’s because I’m super sleep deprived and my brain is being weird. What about you?
IT’S WINTER, YOU SONS OF BITCHES
TIME FOR SNOW
TIME FOR COLD
TIME FOR ME TO REGRET THE FACT THAT I AM A LIZARD
Shoots and Latters
I haven’t pic-bombed you recently, have I?
GET PIC-BOMBED!!!!!!! ! !! 1

Pass!
Awwww yeah!

I’m pretty sure I know which question I missed because I overthought it, haha.
Now the next step is to wait for them to contact me (they have to review my test and the recording of me taking it to be sure I wasn’t cheating, haha) so that I can take my official oath.
Super exciting!
What Color Be Ye?
Or rather, what season are you, color-wise?
I know an online analyzer is probably not the most accurate thing, but I’ve taken quizzes and the like before and gotten the same result, so…

Personally, I think I look horrible in blues. But this may explain why I gravitate to a lot of pinks and purples, especially for eyeshadow.
I also just might have a bias against blue, as anytime I try to use blue eyeshadow it ends up looking super tacky. So I never use blue eyeshadow. And since I try to match my eyeshadow with at least part of my outfit, I guess I never have to match blue and thus don’t wear it much.
Maybe I could try incorporating more blue by matching it with earrings instead.
What is your season?
Pretty Tree
Yo, check out how vibrant this tree is against the green grass and blue sky.

That is all.
My current stress response:
Signing up for marathons.
That’s not weird at all.
