I’ve posted a decent amount of Brian Regan-related material on here already, but I was working on notes/practice problems in my office this afternoon and wanted something to listen to, so I listened to his “Live” recording.
Unfortunately there is no video of these routines, which sucks ‘cause a good portion of Brian’s humor his visual. But it’s still freaking hilarious. The “Stupid in School,” “Truck Drivers,” and “Crank Calls” routines are all fantastic, but they’re all good.

In other news: Andrew Bird came out with a new album and I can’t seem to get the song “Sisyphus” out of my head.
I came across Andrew Bird’s music thanks to an animated short I saw on YouTube quite some time ago about a mouse who lives with/keeps captive another mouse head. There was an Andrew Bird song playing in it, so I always think of that animation whenever I hear Andrew Bird.

Lirty Dies
So as you all know (if you read my blog and/or if you live in Calgary), this month has been hella cold. This means that I have been consistently wearing my on-ear headphones while walking to help keep my ears warm.*
And of course, if there are headphones, there is music. I like to put my entire music library on shuffle so that I can hear all sorts of types of music as I gun around on the trial.
My shuffle has been giving me a lot of Capitol Steps lately. If you don’t know who they are, they’re a political satire group that takes popular songs and re-writes the lyrics to be about something political/scandalous.
I found them through my dad; I think he knew one of the members and got some of their CDs from that person. We (my mom and dad and I) got to see them live in Spokane back when I was in high school, so that was awesome.
At the end of their shows, they have a guy perform a “Lirty Dies” routine, which is a bunch of spoonerisms focused on one or two major scandals from the year.
Anyway, I’ve gotten a few of these “Lirty Dies” come up on shuffle in the past few days, which reminded me of how funny they are.
Here are two of my favorites, “Falicornia” (from 2004) and “Gush and Bore” (from 2001).

This is a different guy than the guy who used to do them, but he’s still pretty good!
Anyway, if you ever get a chance to see them live (they usually perform in and around D.C., but they did come to Spokane at least once), go see them!

I like Disturbed’s cover a little bit more because I think they capture the mood of the song a bit better, but this is really good, too!
It’s sad that Avi is gone, but the new dude (Matt, far left) seems cool. I love the surprising bass he hits at 2:02. He didn’t sound like he’d have a bass range until he did that, nice.

Totoro
I completely forgot to mention this, but on my birthday, Nate and I watched My Neighbor Totoro because it was one of those movies that I watched repeatedly as a kid and he had never seen it before.
The “original” one with the first set of English-dub voice actors is, I guess, ridiculously hard to find now; the only English-dub version you can find now is the Disney dub version.
It makes a huge difference. It’s not nearly as enjoyable in my opinion. That might just be because I’m *that person* who memorizes every inflection, pause, and emphasis in dialogue because my brain has decided that’s more important information than, say, remembering to shower every once and a while—but the only thing I could focus on for the whole movie were all of the differences in the dialogue and the way it was spoken.
I hope Nate found it okay (he probably did because he hadn’t seen the original?), but it was super distracting for me and detracted from the amazingness that is My Neighbor Totoro.
Edit: this was the best comparison I could find. It’s hard to tell what’s what if you haven’t heard both of them; maybe try with earbuds and listen to the original through the left ear only and the new one through the right ear only.

It’s basically the same as the old one, but I added a few new Vines that I’ve discovered since then and took out a few that I no longer really laughed at.

Weezer, I am not disappoint anymore
A while back I wrote a blog about Weezer’s new cover of Toto’s Africa. My main complaint was about just how bland the cover was. They didn’t seem to put their own flair into it; it sounded almost identical to the original. In my opinion, half the reason for a band to do a cover is to put their own flair on a song.
So when I saw today that Weezer had released their Teal Album, an album of cover songs, I wasn’t really too hyped.
But I listened to their cover of A-ha’s Take On Me, and they do a much better job of giving it the Weezer flair than they did with Africa. It still sounds a lot like the original, but you can definitely tell it’s a different band covering the song.
A lot of the other covers aren’t too bad, but this was my favorite.
So yeah.
Under the Tucson Sun
This is a really well-done set of drone captures of Tucson. It’s got some neat transition effects in there that kind of set it apart from your typical time lapse/drone flyover.
Also, CHVRCHES song.

I Knew I Liked Mike Posner
I liked his music before he became super well-known with “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” (which sounds like music snobbery—not trying to be snobby, just saying that I knew of him before that song). I didn’t know much about him as a person, but his music always came across as very genuine and full of a human vibe that a lot of music of his style doesn’t seem to have.
This is a very beautiful, relatable song that just makes me like him more.

So I’ve never really liked prank channels on YouTube (or pranks in general), but this video was linked through r/Calgary due to the large number of porch package thieves going on up here.
I love the effort behind this. I also hate that people are such scumbags that this kind of a thing is even an issue.
Anyway, this led me to the creator’s channel (Mark Rober). It’s full of cool science stuff and experiments. I guess he used to work for NASA and designed a bunch of stuff for the Mars Rover. Check him out!

I’d probably like it more if I recognized more of the songs. I wasn’t really “hip to teh soundz” of 2018 compared to previous years.
Don’t want to diminish Earworm’s talent, though. It’s a good mashup, it’s just one I don’t “recognize,” if that makes sense.
In fact, the only song I could recognize was This Is America. Seriously.
I probably know some of the others, but not in mashup form.
I do like the look of a lot of the music videos, though…I’ll have to give ‘em a watch and see if I like the corresponding songs as well!
