Bro.

This is simultaneously obscene and one of the most impressive architectural things ever.

Do…do you get an in-house chef? What if you just want to live there alone? What if you just want to cook plain-ass spaghetti every night and then eat it in your underwear while watching Riverdale?

(Not that I do that ever.)

Can the chef watch Riverdale with you?

And it comes furnished, right? What if you want to use your own furniture? How hard is it to get all of that out of there and replace it with your Walmart spatulas and La-Z-Boy chair?

Excess like this is weird to me. Like, on one hand: why? But on the other hand: why not?

But also also: living in the most expensive house in the world is not something I’d ever want to be able to say. Think of all the other things you could do with that money.

But also also also: it is art, to an extent.

You still get bird poop on your windows, though. Money can’t buy poopless birds.

And that’s probably one of the weirdest sentences I’ve ever written.

OH GOD THE MATHEMATICIANS FOUND SOME GOOD CHALK

I HATE the feeling of chalk on my hands. I fortunately haven’t had to use it very much due to how I lecture (I put partially completed notes up on the doc cam and fill them in with pen…sweet, sweet, glorious pen), but when I was a TA most of the lab rooms just had regular chalkboards and I had to deal with that.

It gets EVERYWHERE. Maybe this Japanese chalk is different, but I would get out of lab just COVERED in chalk dust. Hell, the notebooks I used when I TA’d are still coated in chalk film.

Blegh.

Hey How I Tile

So in the division between mathematicians and statisticians, I still firmly place myself in the “statistician” camp, as I feel that I could discuss several statistical topics at a graduate+ level (especially things like regression, SEM, multivariate analysis in general, etc.), but I cannot say the same thing about math.

With that in mind, I enjoy the idea of tessellation to the fullest extent of my understanding of it – which is not that deep.

So when I heard this, I got really excited!

An “einstein” is an aperiodic monotile, which means that it is a single shape tiles the plane but does so without a repeating pattern. Apparently a true one has never been found before this. Check out the link above for a better description than I can give, or watch this interview with one of the co-discoverers, Craig Kaplan.

Cool!

Thoughtz

If the star sign of Aquarius was a band, it would be Animal Collective.

Fight me.

You can’t tell me that the bright chaos of FloriDada isn’t mad Aquarius energy.

An Experiment:

So I want y’all to listen to this song (especially if you don’t spend a lot – or any – time on TikTok:

Done?

What emotion or general feeling did that evoke for you?

Was it XTREME NOSTALGIA?

I’m just curious, because currently there are a lot of videos going around on TikTok where this song is being used as the background sound and the video is just a slideshow of pictures of late 80s, 90s, early 2000s stuff.

Example 1

Example 2

Example 3

Example 4

Example 5

Example 6

I’m curious if the nostalgia trigger is the music itself or if it just triggers nostalgia because I associate it with those slideshows.

Noooo, not Diaz!

Well, hell.

That freaking blows, dude. He had such a good year last year and this is such a sucky way to end a big game like this. Seeing his brother cry too is rough.

Edit: he’s got a full-thickness tear of his patellar tendon. He’s going to miss at least eight moths in recovery.

Edit 2: missing the whole season, but it looks like he’s working hard to recover!

Tell me something:

Have you heard of the movie “The Full Monty?”

I’m asking because, at least in my experience, this seems like a fairly obscure movie that most people haven’t heard of. I’ve never heard anyone reference it or even refer to it in passing. I always thought it was just some one-off British comedy that was made and then just fell out of sight.

Apparently, though, it was in the running to win Best Picture (and several other Academy Awards) in 1997. It was beaten out by Titanic.

And, according to Wiki, it was the highest-grossing film in the UK until…Titanic.

That’s…that’s wild. Do any of you remember this movie at the 1997 Academy Awards? Because I certainly don’t.

Wild.

Time Before Land

HEYOOOOOOOOOOO so did you watch (and love) The Land Before Time as a kid?

I did.

But I never watched any of the 10+ sequels.

Lucky for us, though, Alteori did, and she’s got hilarious reviews of all of them in a big YouTube playlist.

Her review of the first one is pretty chill, but they get more hysterical as the movies get worse. Her laugh is infectious.

OOF

This song came up on shuffle and it was the first time I’d heard it in a while.

I forgot how FREAKING AMAZING it is.

That is all.

Chris Martin’s Birthday

It’s Chris Martin’s birthday today!

So have a beautiful live performance of Human Heart, because that song is absolutely heartbreaking and magical. Like pretty much every other Coldplay song.

Solar

This is a wonderfully produced little documentary on our Solar System.

Uranus is such a weird planet, yo. It’s my favorite.

That is all.

Happy Anosmia Awareness Day!

As per tradition, here’s an anosmia-related video. She discusses the very important difference between smell and taste and how anosmics can taste things (the five basic tastes) but miss out on flavor (the mingling of taste and smell).

END!

This is the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while

Thank you, Tumblr.

This is how I imagine I look when I’m running versus when I’m done and feel all accomplished, hahaha.

House (not MD)

Super interesting stuff.

I’ve always liked small spaces. Hell, I went through a phase in junior high during which I felt like even my own room was too big and thus I moved all my important things into my closet and hung out there instead.

Our place is pretty much perfect for me and Nate, but if I lived on my own, I’d love to live in a tiny little studio.

Yes, it’s a Matt Walsh video, sorry

So let’s ignore the whole Dylan Mulvaney part of this video (which is like all of it, I know). The thing I wanted to talk about in this video is something that I’ve noticed both conservatives and liberals doing: setting up this “us versus them” idea.

Here, it’s extreme. How quickly Walsh shoves his critics into the “them” group, and how quickly he turns against them, despite the fact that the people calling him “mean” are pretty traditional conservatives that would likely agree with a lot of the other stuff Walsh says. The harshly spoken “they” and “them” emphasizes a divide between an “us” and a “those other people” in such an exaggerated, vile way that it just stokes that fire of “we are two separate species of people, and we should be natural enemies of one another and should never compromise on our views. If you have ANY of the same viewpoints as the “other,” you are a traitor and are just as bad as them.”

I think there’s always been an “us versus them” mentality in politics, but I think everything’s just become so much more divisive than it ever has been, which makes it hard to actually operate as a unified country.

It’s pretty sad, really.

Where…where did this come from?

I swear to god I don’t remember making this, but I can’t find where I would have downloaded it and this is EXACTLY the kind of stupid thing that I WOULD make in a fit of LOLOLOLOL, so who the hell knows.

(Yes, I uploaded it to YouTube in August 2023 because it wasn’t there originally…just on my compy.)

Sleep? Nah! WHY BUY A MATTRESS

Cake

This song was the audio for some random TikTok I stumbled upon today and it immediately released a weird wave of nostalgia from my mid-childhood, back when I’d spend the weekend at my dad’s condo and I’d watch all the weird shit Cartoon Network had on after 9 PM (including Adult Swim, when that became a thing).

Edit:

This show was over my head at the time, but MAN I remember that intro.

And suddenly it’s 2009

I have a lot of music. Because of this (and because Apple’s shuffle is not truly random), there are a lot of songs that I haven’t actually heard in a long time.

One of which is this song, which came up for the first time in YEARS when I shuffled my music:

And I was immediately transported back to 2009 when I’d downloaded this song. I was at UBC, still in the office in the psych building (instead of that god-awful botany annex) and spent a lot of time listening to this song loudly over my headphones.

It just…ugh, it just sent me back there so easily. And the whole song just aches of despair because that’s the emotion I most strongly associate with the time I’d downloaded it.

I often wonder if my memories that are tied to music are actually stronger than most peoples’ music-based memories since I am missing the most “memory-connected” sense and thus I have to compensate.

Now I have to go cry in a corner and convince my brain that UBC didn’t really happen, because OH MY GOD I had the worst time there.

Barak Obama is SCAAAAAAAARED of me!

This little rap from the Dean was stuck in my head today, so I’m going to share it with y’all:

That is all.

McNeil!!!

YAY!

Four-year, $50 million extension with the Mets!

Awesome. I hope I get to see him play in person someday.

“Trains are blameless, holy creatures.”

I’m sorry, I’m sure I’ve posted this vid in some form or another on here, but it’s 4 AM, I’ve had sugar, and this is the most hysterical thing in the world right now.

“My earlobes WON’T STOP GROWING!” and “I’m gonna go throw myself in the thresher!” are lines that just randomly pop into my head sometimes.

GET THEE TO SOME SENNHEISERS

AND LISTEN TO THIS

I’ve posted this on here several times, but today was the first time I’ve listened to it with my Sennheisers (I know, can you believe it?) and it’s even better.

Pavarotti was ridiculous.

GLOBULAR

I like this kind of stuff, fight me.

Also, in my 2017 NaNoWriMo, I had a mapmaker who was still making globes when it had been confirmed that the earth was lens-shaped rather than round (it was a dumb story, haha).

Winter Weezer

Weezer’s Winter version of SZNZ is out, bitches!

Dark Enough to See the Stars is fantastic.

United State of Pop 2022 is here!

Hmm…not my favorite. I don’t know if it’s because I don’t recognize many of the songs, but this one doesn’t jive for me.

Sad.

There’s always next year!
