Hypothermic Half

I did my run for the Hypothermic Half Marathon today!

Of course it was obscenely cold outside on the day I decided to do this, so I ended up doing it inside on the treadmill, haha.

Still counts, though!

OH GOD I’M COMMITTED NOW

The very first marathon I’ve ever signed up for!

Now I HAVE to do it, which is a little intimidating.

I ran 21 miles today, though, so that’s a start.

(I also signed up for the Vancouver Half Marathon, but that’s easy.)

ACCUMULATE

So here’s that “running total” graph animation that I’ve been doing for the past few years showing my cumulative walking/running miles. Now updated for 2022!

It wasn’t even a contest last year. 2022 was up top like 99% of the time. Hell, 2022’s total surpassed 2015’s END OF THE YEAR total on June 16.

Let’s see what this year does!

OH LAWD, SHE WALKIN’

(Sorry.)

Guess what time of the year it is?

If you guessed Easter, you’re an IDIOT!

If you guessed “the start of the year, which means Claudia’s going to inundate us with a bunch of walking stats that no one cares about,” you’re RIGHT!

LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Here are my walking stats for January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022.

Total number of walks: 365
Total mileage: 5,555.55
Total number of steps: 11,912,482
Total calories burned: 418,221
Total walking time (minutes): 80,253.19 [that’s about 55.73 days]
Average speed (mph) per walk: 3.72

5,555.55 miles is approximately the great circle distance between Fresno, California and Paris, France or between Toronto, Canada and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Also, this is a new mileage record. Let’s demolish it next year!

Presents of Mind

Yo!

So we opened presents today because why the hell not? My family knows exactly what I like, haha. Observe:

A magnet from my mom. I’ve got it stuck to my treadmill where I can see it from my chair.

A FREAKING SCHERZER JERSEY from Nate. I’ve dubbed it my “Scherzey” and will wear it on opening day next season (it’s already covered in Pepper hair, haha).

I also got a cat calendar as always. WOO!

Run from the Blah

I don’t know why, but it seems like the less I feel like running before I actually start, the better the run is.

Yesterday was migraine hell and I was still feeling the fogginess and general craptitude this morning. But I started my run and BAM! It was a freaking fantastic one.

Odd news.

5,000 Miles for 2022

I hit 5,000 walking/running miles for the year today!

I’m too lazy to check, but I’m pretty sure this is the earliest I’ve hit that milestone in a year. I think it’s happened in December the last few times I’ve hit it.

So that’s cool.

That’s all, haha.

18.5

I have a long way to go to get to a marathon, but we’re making progress weekend by weekend.

Ugh, that pace is slow as hell, though.

(Sorry, these updates are pretty much going to come every Sunday now.)

It’s Every Damn Day with These Toenails, Man

There’s a blog title for ya.

Anyway, now a THIRD toe on my left foot has decided that toenails are out of fashion and is trying to get rid of his.

There’s a lot of blood in my sock, haha.

The funny thing is that all the toes on my right foot are ABSOLUTELY FINE. But there must be something about the way I walk/run that just brutalizes the toes on my left foot.

I’m guessing I still treat my whole right leg with more caution than the left, since my right knee was the one I hurt back in 2017.

But who knows.

Anyway, they can do what they want; I’m not stopping.

NOPE ON A ROPE

Okay, so I was going to type out this entire morning’s ordeal in excruciating detail, but then I realized that it would be super gross and super embarrassing to do so – even for me, the queen of super gross and super embarrassing blog posts (how many times have I talked about my feet/toenails now?).

So I’m just going to say this: the following gif represents me in the bushes beside the river walk at about 7 AM this morning, except replace the solid poop with something a little…less solid. And throw a pair of unsalvageable underwear somewhere in the picture, too.

And then imagine this occurring THREE MILES OUT from home.

It was a rough morning.

Time for Early Morning Running!

So it’s that time of year again when I’m going to have to start getting up obnoxiously early to go running. Specifically, I’m getting up at 4 AM so that I can start my run at 4:30.

Pros:

  • No one is out at that time of day and it’s GREAT
  • I’m done with my run and back home by around 9 AM, which means I’ve got the whole rest of the day to do my nonsense
  • It’s nice and cool out (relatively)

Cons:

  • I HATE GOING TO BED EARLY
  • I HATE GETTING UP EARLY
  • Seriously, it takes so much effort to get up that early for me. Like…4 AM is my natural bedtime.
  • As the year progresses, it will start staying darker longer in the morning, which is always super depressing

BLAAAAAAH

Shoutout to Fitly

I’m pretty sure I’ve posted about these before, but if you are into running and want a fantastic running pack, give Fitly a try.

Their minimalist pack is SO light and comfortable. I wear this in the fall/winter/spring (when I don’t need to take water with me) and I seriously forget I’m wearing it.

Their hydro running pack is what I wear in the summer when it’s hot enough that I want to bring water just in case. Compared to a lot of the other water-carrying running packs I see people wear, this one is super low profile and doesn’t bounce around much (and probably wouldn’t bounce at all on anyone who’s even a little bit larger/taller than me. I’m so short I have to have everything on the tightest setting and it’s still a bit big, haha).

I’ve only seen one other person with a Fitly up here, which is shocking, ‘cause they’re SO GOOD.

Get one!

(I’m not getting paid by them, I promise.)

I FREAKING LOVE RUNNING

I had a really nice run this morning. It was sunny but there was a nice cool breeze the whole time. And very few people are out on Tuesday mornings, so it was very peaceful and solitary.

And considering the only time I’m not in panic mode about everything is when I’m running, that’s just giving me extra bonus happy time.

Wee.

WELL THAT FORECAST WAS WRONG

Me: Hey forecast, whatcha got for me?
Forecast: Sunny and calm until 11 AM! :D
Me: Cool! Time to go running.
Forecast: lolololo fuk u have rain
Me: Wait hang on I’ve still got five miles until I get h-
Forecast: FUK U HAVE RAIN
Forecast: HAVE ALL THE RAIN
Forecast: DROWN, LOSER

(It rained a lot on my return run home.)
(I got extremely wet.)
(I think this breaks the record of how wet I’ve gotten on a run.)
(Was super cold, had to shower, then go teach.)

(Ugh.)

FEEL DA HEAT

UGH, it’s freaking hot here, but I ran my virtual half-marathon for the Calgary Marathon today.

Now I want to go bathe in ice.

 CHIP

So the Bill Chipman Palouse Trail (the part of the pathway that connects Moscow and Pullman) is super boring to walk on. Whenever I come back to Moscow and need to get my walking miles, walking on the trail gets old pretty fast.

However, I am now back in Moscow for the first time since picking up running, and running on the trail is SO MUCH BETTER.

It’s flat, it’s smooth, and there are like five people on it at a time, which makes it way less busy than any trail up here. My current running distance doesn’t quite get me to Pullman from my mom’s house, but pretty close.

WOO!

Yesterday:

So since yesterday was my blogiversary and thus my blog post had to be dedicated to that, here’s what else went on yesterday that I didn’t mention:

I did my virtual Bloomsday run!

I typically run seven miles out and seven back to get my 14, but I decided to just tack on the extra 0.46 for Bloomsday on the end of the seven miles out. That took me to the end of Bowness Park. It looks like they’re either rebuilding the Stoney Trail bridge or are making a new one so that there is a bridge for each direction of traffic.

Either way, I love this bridge. It’s so tall and almost surreal.

April showers? More like April FLASH BLIZZARDS

So remember that run I did on Tuesday in the cold and snow?

Remember how it started snowing partway through the run and I got a little cold, but it actually wasn’t too horrible?

HA.
Buckle up.

So today it wasn’t supposed to start snowing until a little later, and even then, it was only supposed to be light snow.

A skiff, if you will.

It wasn’t supposed to amount to much.

So I leave to go running and it start snowing lightly. I’m like, okay, cool, whatev. This should stop soon. But the closer I got to the trail, the harder it started snowing. And by the time I was ready to start running, there was at least a quarter of an inch on the ground already.

But I’m stubborn as all hell, so I was like screw this, I’mma run.

And so I did.

And it kept snowing.

So I ran through 2.5-3 inches of wet snow. All 15 miles. And it was snowing these big, wet, obnoxious flakes the whole time; I had to take my glasses off about three miles into the run because I kept having to clear the snow off my lenses every thirty seconds or so.

I’m not exaggerating.

The last two miles were the worst, though, because I was back on the busier part of the trail, meaning – even in this garbage weather – there were tracks in the slushy snow which made it EXTRA HARD to get any sort of traction. It was a very slow, annoying two miles.

I got home and was 100% soaking wet.

At least my hat got cleaned, haha.

Brrrrrr

I got snowed on while running this morning and OH MY GOD I got so wet and cold.

You’d think we’d be snow-free near the end of April, right?

WRONG

Ugh.

Suck It, 2015-2020

Remember that “running total” graph I made for my yearly walking mileages? I did one last year and the year before, both showing running total for each year from 2015 up to the current year.

I love repeating my content, so here it is again – now including the running total for 2021.

[Edit: okay, so apparently old versions of this graphic just automatically update with the most recent data I’ve fed it, which is why 2022’s mileage is in there. Just…ignore that for now.]

My cumulative mileage in 2020 was higher than that in 2021 on January 7, but then 2021 dominated until 2017 took over a little while in July (because of my 30-mile days and that one 50-mile day). Then it was 2021 again.

Can I beat 2021’s running total this year? I GUESS WE’LL SEE LOL THERE’S GOT TO BE AN UPPER LIMIT TO THIS NONSENSE BUT I HAVEN’T HIT IT YET

Walk da Walk 2021

Are you ready for walking stats that NO ONE CARES ABOUT??????

Me too!

Here are my walking stats for January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021.

Total number of walks: 363 (I didn’t walk/run on the day Jazzy died and I didn’t walk/run on the day I thought I had COVID.)
Total mileage: 5,315
Total number of steps: 11,604,343
Total calories burned: 382,492
Total walking time (minutes): 78,890.32 [that’s about 54.78 days]
Average speed (mph) per walk: 3.71

5,315 miles is approximately the great circle distance between Portland, Oregon to Moscow, Russia or between Lisbon, Portugal and Cape Town, South Africa.

Let’s do better next year!

5,000 Miles – 2021 Edition

Today I hit FIVE THOUSAND WALKING/RUNNING miles for the year!

I guess it’s not that big of an accomplishment since I’ve done it twice before, but there it is.

Actually, I think I hit 5,000 earlier this year than I did last year and in 2017. Let’s check…

2017: my 5,000th mile happened on December 22
2020: my 5,000th mile happened on December 20

So that’s kinda cool.

Anyway.

Half

Completed my second (virtual) Calgary half marathon today! Not a very fast time, but it’s done.

Edit: look at this beautiful medal!

Run in the Rain

Today was supposed to be rainy. Like all day. So I decided to walk on my treadmill instead of go outside, especially since it was raining quite hard already when I woke up.

But six miles into my walk, the rain stopped. And being the WEATHER WIZARD that I am, I was like, “hey, there’s no way the rain will start up again, so let’s go run outside!”

And so I ran outside.

And about half a mile out, it started POURING. It continued to pour for the whole first half of the run (seven miles).

Pros:

  • Absolutely NO ONE was out in that, so I had the trail all to myself. I guess there was that one guy I passed who looked like he’d made the worst decision of his life going out for a run that day, but other than that, NO ONE was out.
  • I felt like a badass even though I probably looked like an idiot.
  • It was finally cool enough to run in the middle of the day rather than having to get up at ass-o’-clock to do so.
  • Uh…my hat got cleaned by the rain?

Cons:

  • SPLASHY SPLASHY
  • I’m pretty sure one of the puddles that I had to run through was like six inches deep
  • There were porta potties at my turnaround point. I had to utilize one and it was completely flooded inside.
  • I’m pretty sure my shoes are going to be squeaky forever now, because every time I get a pair of Kinvaras even slightly wet, they squeak.

I’mma go dry off now.

Edit: OH MY GOD I AM SO FREAKING COLD

B-B-B-Bloomsday!

Like last year, I signed up to do the virtual Bloomsday run. Unlike last year, though, when I ran on a pretty warm day, today was cold and windy and rainy and pretty miserable. But running is addictive as hell and so I went outside and did it anyway.

Yes, I know I’m not a very fast runner. Deal with it.

I’m super cold now, haha.
