Merr Chrissmss

Went on a nice walk with Nate this morning. We found a restaurant that was open downtown and hung out there for a little bit. ‘Twas nice.

Then we went home and I GOT MY MIND BLOWN BY LISTENING TO THE LAUNCH WITH THESE SENNHEISERS.

Oh my god, it’s so good. So good. This headphone amp has a bass boost option and you can be damn sure I’m never going to turn that thing off.

Holy crap, I drew something

It’s a freaking Christmas miracle.

ssklsdfslshspef SENNHEISERS

Guys. My freaking husband got me headphones. The headphones. The Sennheiser HD 600s. These are the ones.

I have wanted these headphones for quite some time, as everything I’d read about them basically said they’re the best “under $1000” headphones you could really get.

12-23-2018-a12-23-2018-b12-23-2018-c

(He also got me an amp because these headphones have a high enough impedance that the amp is necessary for power.)

And dudes. They’re so good.

You can hear every sound so separately from everything else. Everything is clear and crisp. It’s going to take a long time for me to explore all my music with these headphones, but I’ll keep a list of favorites (songs that sound RIDICULOUSLY good with these) here:

  • Algorithm (Alternate Reality Version) – Muse
  • O Magnum Mysterium – Lauridsen
  • Hide and Seek (A Cappella Cover) – Dan Wright
  • Sunshine (Adagio in D Minor) – John Murphy

Edit: DUDES THAT FREAKING PLANET EARTH II SUITE SOUNDS OBSCENE. What is that word for when a song gives you tinglies? Frisson? This is frisson up the butt, yo.

IS IT TIME TO GO TO MOSCOW YET?

I WANT TO GO TO MOSCOW

(This is an excellent blog post.)

Christmas Movies

I was looking through all my (currently unpublished ‘cause I’m garbage) blog posts and came across the one I did last December where I ranked Christmas songs from favorite to least favorite.

So since I’m the least interesting human being on the planet, let’s do that with Christmas movies.

GOOOOOO!

(Also, just like the Christmas songs, only movies that I’ve seen and remember are on here.)

A Christmas Story
This is THE Christmas movie. Fight me. I always loved how TBS had this running all day (like, all 24 hours) on Christmas.

The Santa Clause
Tim Allen!

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
My mom will not be pleased with me, but I do really enjoy the Home Alone movies. The second one was better than the first one.

Home Alone

A Muppet Christmas Carol
I like to think that Charles Dickens would have been down with Gonzo playing him in this movie.

The Nightmare Before Christmas
Tim Burton, pre-Johnny Depp.

Jingle All the Way
Arnold Schwarzenegger in comedic roles is the best Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Miracle on 34th Street
I just like this story.

Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas
This is like some weird little off-shoot, straight to DVD movie. It’s like a mid-quel or something, but I like it, okay?

How the Grinch Stole Christmas
The original only. LEAVE DR. SEUSS ALONE

White Christmas
The only reason this isn’t last on the list is because I’d probably actually appreciate it now that I’m older. My dad would make me watch this every Christmas and I was so done with it.

It’s a Wonderful Life
Too…grim? I just never liked this one.

I miss Michael

More Rage Quit. Sorry, I’m still super burnt out and this is all I’ve got right now bye.

“How many fuckin’ dogs ya got?”

Ow

The good thing about this winter: we’re getting Chinook after Chinook, which means it is substantially warmer than it was last winter. I think we were in the -20s around this time last year; we’ve been in the 20s/30s lately.

The bad thing about this winter: we’re getting Chinook after Chinook, which means I’ve been having pretty constant headaches.

But I don’t feel like I’m going to get frostbite every time I go out walking, so I’d say that’s worth it.

IT’S DECEMBER. IT’S A LIST. OMFG IT’S THE DECEMBER LIST

  • The temperature got into the 40s today. What in the hell. It’s December. I’m pretty sure we were well into the negative Fahrenheits by this time last year.
  • I found a $50 bill on my walk a few days ago. That’s the most money I’ve ever found!

12-18-2018

  • As I was looking through my enormous 200+ Word document of blog posts that I have yet to upload, I noticed a large number of my posts start with the word “so.” So that’s weird.
  • I wonder if it bothers my students that I spell things the American way rather than the Canadian/British way. I know I had one student a few semesters back who was really bothered by it, but I was like “bro, I’ve assimilated up to the point where I’m relatively good with Celsius and can pretty quickly convert miles to kilometers, but I’m not just going to start throwing extra u’s in words, okay? You know exactly what the words “color” and “behavior” and “fiber” mean. Calm yoself.”
  • I’ve found a few more Chicago Hope episodes on YouTube and was watching them all over the weekend while I was grading and I’m aDDICTED TO THAT SHOW AGAIN WHY THE HELL IS IT NOT OUT ON DVD
  • I’m super excited to see my mom next week. Moscow party time!

And now the blog is over.

I lika dis

So I’ve never really liked prank channels on YouTube (or pranks in general), but this video was linked through r/Calgary due to the large number of porch package thieves going on up here.

I love the effort behind this. I also hate that people are such scumbags that this kind of a thing is even an issue.

Anyway, this led me to the creator’s channel (Mark Rober). It’s full of cool science stuff and experiments. I guess he used to work for NASA and designed a bunch of stuff for the Mars Rover. Check him out!

Pretty Girl

Here’s more Jazzy in the sun.

12-16-2018

I’m not very fun or interesting, but at least my kitty is pretty.

FINALS SLDKFJSLFJSL

Final exams are always chaotic, especially if you have to try to coordinate four instructors and approximately 1,000 students across three different rooms.

BUT IT’S OVER NOW, so it’s time to grade.

Excitement overload.

Also, I’m pretty sure my blogs got lost in the mail. It says they got shipped, but it’s been more than two months now (I think?) and even with the postal strike that happened, I would have thought they’d be here by now. SAD NEWS. I guess I can just order another copy, it was only like $20.

THE PUZZLER

This is super interesting, holy cow.

A Decade

Ten years ago today, I graduated with my B.S. in psych. That was my first degree. It took five semesters and a whole lot of work, but I did end up graduating with a cumulative 4.0 GPA, so that’s kinda cool.

And while that degree on its own was pretty useless, it did get me on the road to the point I’m at now, so I can’t say that it was useless in the grand scheme of things.

Woo!

What were you doing ten years ago today?

Mash

DJ Earworm’s mashup didn’t really make me too excited about this year’s music. But this mashup by AnDyWuMUSICLAND certainly does.

I love how all mashups have such different sounds and takes on the songs within them.

Let’s Write the Wrongs

As I do every time I hit my NaNoWriMo minimum of 50,000 words at the end of November, I immediately stop giving a crap about the thing I was working on and tuck it away to either a) not be looked at until like half a year has passed or b) not be looked at ever.

I was not too enthused about my story this year, but after taking a week or so away from it, I think it’s actually something that I could refine and make into an actual coherent story of sorts—one that, assuming a miracle occurs and I am suddenly granted with the ability to write well, I’d like to try to do something with. Publish it or something.

(Wild dreams, I know.)

Getting something I’ve written published has actually been one of my dreams since I was in like first grade and was writing all those coo stories. But I’m terrible at writing and everybody wants to get published and what the hell chance do I have anyway with the garbage story ideas I come up with anyway?

But at least this year’s project might actually work as a thing.

Prime (2009) is a cool little story, I think, but until I figure out the tone in which I want it told, it’s staying hidden.

Googol (2010) would immediately get me sued. Even if I changed the name of the company in question in the story, it would still be bad news, I think.

(We won’t talk about 2011 and 2012.)

Arborhood (2014) is one that miiight be workable, but I’m not sure. Right now there’s way too much exposition.

Earth’s Edge (2017) became character-driven very quickly, but at the expense of the whole main point of the story. There’s really no reason for them to be doing what the whole story was set up for them to be doing, so yeah. I really liked my characters, though.

But this year’s story? Possibly workable.

Maybe that will motivate me to, you know…work on it.

Muse omfg

This thing is a cinematic experience all on its own. I have never heard a song like this that wasn’t specifically written for a movie.

Like…holy hell. Get some good headphones on and crank this. The original version of this song is good, but this is on a whole other level.

I am literally freaking crying, it’s beautiful.

WAIT WAT

So here’s something that just surprised the hell out of me. You know Sunshine, that movie I never shut up about?

Chris Evans was in it. “Captain America” Chris Evans.

He was “Mace.”

And I had no idea it was him.

What is this universe.

I was pathetic.

So I was looking over my old blogs (because THAT’S THE KIND OF OBNOXIOUS HUMAN I AM) and noticed that on December 8, 2013, I hit 1,300 walking miles for the year.

I hit 1,300 walking miles on April 29 this year.

My old distances were garbage, yo.

Semester OVER

UGH this was a long semester. Lots of work. Lots of lecturing. Lots of answering emails. Lots of office hours.

600 students is a lot of students.

I’m so freaking burnt out right now, but I guess I can’t really afford to be. Time to start working on next semester, I guess.

But not today. Today I will be the most useless human being in existence.

OH WAIT I ALREADY AM

Brrr

My cold weather endurance is garbage right now. The temperature on my walk this afternoon ranged from 14 to 3 and I felt so freaking cold.

I need to get back into winter mode. The negative Fahrenheits are coming, yo.

Anyway.

Edit: hahahaha, FEBRUARY 2019 IS COMING

Rage Quit!

Haven’t watched one of Michael’s new Rage Quits in a while. This one was pretty great.

United State of Pop: 2018 Edition

The mashup is here!

It’s…okay.

I’d probably like it more if I recognized more of the songs. I wasn’t really “hip to teh soundz” of 2018 compared to previous years.

Don’t want to diminish Earworm’s talent, though. It’s a good mashup, it’s just one I don’t “recognize,” if that makes sense.

In fact, the only song I could recognize was This Is America. Seriously.

I probably know some of the others, but not in mashup form.

I do like the look of a lot of the music videos, though…I’ll have to give ‘em a watch and see if I like the corresponding songs as well!

iToe

Today, I decided to see if my iPhone would accept one of my toe prints as an additional “fingerprint” that could be used to unlock my phone.

Y’know, for science.

Results (there’s music about half way through, so keep the volume kinda low):

(Would the U of C still let me teach if they found out that this is how I spend my free time?)
(Or is this how profs get tenure?)

Also, I love that my husband can come in the living room, see me pressing my iPhone to my big toe, and not be phased by it.

Note: it does not accept a tongue print.

Clarinets are Sexy

So remember this guy?

Well, Happy Hanukah.

The Wrimo is OVER!

So NaNoWriMo’s done and I won with a relatively decent (for me) margin of time. I usually feel at least some level of accomplishment when I win NaNo, but I didn’t this year.

Which, you know, further confirms that I no longer value anything I do in life, but whatev.

Anyway. Here’s a word cloud.
