Happy Fartmas

So I have no idea when I’ll get these blogs posted.

And I had no idea if anyone of you out there reading this wants to get me a Christmas present.

But if you do, may I ask that you donate to a cat shelter or cat sanctuary instead?

Thank you!

Sweet little Annabelle is no longer with us.

My dad called this afternoon and said that she’d taken a pretty bad turn for the worse and he and Peter made the decision (with input from the vet, of course) to have her put down. I feel incredibly guilty for not being there with her at the end.

Annabelle has been part of my life since 2000. She was my girl. Now she’s gone.

That’s going to be a hard thing to deal with.

I feel really bad for my dad, too. He loved Annabelle. I’ve gone with my mom multiple times to have a kitty or dog put to sleep when it was time, but my dad has never had to do that. The abruptness with which they pass from life to death is a shock. I hope he’s doing okay.

RIP Bell-Bell. You were a unique, wonderful creature.

Yo dog, I herd ur owner has a leash…

Unpleasant PSA: Leash laws exist for a reason. I shouldn’t be getting bitten by a dog whose owner has a leash in her hand but has not attached it to her dog in an on-leash public area. I should also not be hearing “yeah, he gets excited sometimes” as a fucking excuse for why your dog just noshed on my leg.

(Ignore all the other scars on my leg.)

Pro tip: does your dog get excited? Does he tend to bite strangers when he gets excited? Maybe put him on a leash so that you can actually control him a little bit better when you’re on a public pathway full of people.

Like…am I crazy or…?

I’m not skittish around dogs because of dogs. I’m skittish around dogs because of their dumbass owners.

Pleasant PSA: playing Rock Band with my wonderful husband is fantastic.

She’s on my phone charger cord. How is this not obscenely adorable?

Another Jazzy Pic

She’s the most precious thing.

Hahaha, so I took a picture of Jazzy yawning and she yawned so big that it looks like her head is just a mouth.

So Calgary’s first cat café is opening this weekend.

Two things that they’re doing that I really like:

  1. They’re working with the MEOW Foundation, which means that all the cats in the café are adoptable!
  2. The cats are sanctioned off in their own special room, apart from the café itself. I was originally worried that the cats might be in the actual café and thus would have plenty of chances to escape (onto a pretty busy street) as people entered/exited the building. But nope! Safe cat room makes things better. AND you need to make an appointment to visit the cat room portion of the café, meaning that the cats won’t be overwhelmed with too many people at a time.

Hopefully Nate and I can go there someday (and order something non-coffee from the menu, haha), though they’re already quite booked into the future.

I saved* a worm on the sidewalk today.

It was super dried out and moving just enough that I thought it could recover if it was moved to some moist soil, so I picked him up and put him in the cool, shaded soil under a bush near the sidewalk.

Why does this matter?

Back when I was a kid (early elementary school) I was known as the “worm saver” because I would always use my recess time following a rainstorm to go around and make sure the worms out on the sidewalk weren’t going to get stepped on/drowned in a puddle/dried out once it got sunny and hot again. One of my teachers even gave me a necklace with a little pendant of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, because of how often I was out trying to make sure the worms would be safe.

Anyway. It’s been a while since I saved a worm, and doing so today kinda brought me back to elementary school.

*Not sure if I actually saved him. Certainly made it a lot less likely he’d get stepped on, at least.

I have absolutely nothing interesting to say today, so have three pictures of Raymond Cat being weird.

(He likes water…so much that once he turned on the sink faucet, wedged himself in the sink, and let the whole sink fill with water until it was over flowing. Here he looks so distraught that there’s no water in the kitchen sink.)

Milo’s Cat Sanctuary

Reading about all the amazing cats at this cat sanctuary makes me simultaneously sad (to see how much many of them have suffered) and happy (to see how much they’re cared for and how much people are trying to get them adopted out or sponsored).

I know this blog post probably won’t actually get posted until after Christmas (and maybe after my birthday, haha), but if anyone would like to make a donation to the sanctuary as a gift to me, I’d appreciate it.

HAVE SOME ZOO PICTURES ‘cause I keep forgetting to post them.
Well, they’re not “zoo pictures” really. They’re just the butterflies.

(I’m hyper.)

Atlas moths are the best.

Oh, and have a video of these guys. Not sure if this is like a pre-mating thing or if the fluttering one is just having fun annoying the other.

Sorry I don’t have anything more to say today! I spent most of the day doing class prep, which is super fun but time consuming.

I have some bad news, y’all.

My sweet little Annabelle had a stroke and isn’t doing too well right now.

Peter called my mom and told her that they were taking her to the vet the other day because she was walking funny and acting strange, and it sounds like the cause of that was a stroke, not something simpler/treatable like a thyroid issue as we were originally hoping.

So I’m not sure how much longer she’s got, and it’s making me so, so sad. I’ve just spent the past hour or so crying.

Poor little thing. Send her good thoughts, huh?

That is all.

Jazzy Cat

‘Sup, fools?

So I haven’t taken any pictures of Jazzy using my actual camera, mainly because at first I thought she’d be afraid of it, and then later just never had it around. The other day, though, she was posing on the coffee table and was half asleep, so I was able to get my camera and get two decent shots of her.

Sorry, just wanted to spam you with a few cat pictures, ‘cause I don’t do that enough on here.

Cat Tunes

I should crank a sample for Jazzy one day and see how she responds to it. It’s an interesting idea.

Also, Bacon is super cute.

Honey, I Shrunk the Quail

You guys want to see the cutest birds ever?

Have a video.

They had a button quail a while back at the pet store where we got Jazzy and it was super cute.

We got a kitty!

This actually happened yesterday, but I needed to rant about Google yesterday and Jasmine (our new kitty) is super, super shy anyway and we haven’t interacted with her much. But she’s the quietest, smallest, sweetest little thing ever! Nate and I were discussing getting a cat after Christmas sometime, but when we saw Jasmine, it was basically instant love.

We got her at a pet store, but the pet store sells rescue animals from the Animal Rescue Foundation of Alberta. Jasmine was rescued from a hoarder home that had a total of 40 cats in it. She’s missing a whole bunch of teeth, but is super sweet and chill. She’s really scared right now, but we expected that, especially since she had to get a few teeth pulled before we could take her home and her mouth is probably very sore. I’ll update y’all with pictures once she gets more comfortable around us and a camera doesn’t scare her.

Edit: holy freaking crap, she’s the loudest purring cat EVER. It’s wonderful.

Edit 2: she loves it when Nate and I sit on the couch together. She jumps up next to him and rolls around while we love her.

Edit 3: these are the best pictures I can take of her right now. She’s not like Annabelle, who would pose for the camera when she saw it.

“Bambi…I didn’t know you could fly!”

Pretend for a second that you have no idea what a bird is. You know what beaks, feathers, wings, etc. are, but you don’t know what a bird is.
Now read the following:

Birds (class Aves or clade Avialae) are feathered, winged, two-legged, warm-blooded, egg-laying vertebrates.

Modern birds are characterised by feathers, a beak with no teeth, the laying of hard-shelled eggs, a high metabolic rate, a four-chambered heart, and a lightweight but strong skeleton. Extant birds have more or less developed wings; the most recent species without wings was the moa, which is generally considered to have become extinct in the 16th century. Wings are evolved forelimbs, and most bird species can fly.

Birds are social, communicating with visual signals, calls, and songs, and participating in such social behaviours as cooperative breeding and hunting, flocking, and mobbing of predators.

These are all from Wiki’s page on birds. You can’t tell me that from these descriptors that birds don’t sound fucking terrifying.

Okay, I’m done. Back to studying.
