Well, hell.

UGH so today was eventful.

Last night, Vaio was acting kind of strange, giving me a bit of trouble and just running really glitchy-like. This morning it was completely dead. Basically, it was acting like it did back last May when we had to take it in and wipe the hard drive and basically start from scratch.

So I considered a few things:

  • Fixing Vaio last time, when I was in the States, was pretty damn expensive. It would probably be at least 125% as expensive up here.
  • After the first hard drive incident, I looked up the problem online and it sounds like such a thing was fairly common with that model of Vaio. In fact, there were some people who said it had happened to them up to four times with one computer.
  • I have a huge project due on Thursday and don’t have time for screwing around.

I made the decision to use my teaching award money to get a new laptop. I took the bus to a Best Buy on the other side of town and got myself a new shiny! It’s an hp with a touchscreen and a 1 TB harddrive. It’s pretty. Hopefully it will last me a long time!

Now I have to name it. I can’t call it “Vaio” ‘cause it’s not a Vaio, and just calling it “hp” sounds dumb.

I shall think on it.

Dancin’ Pants

So the dude at VGH put in a new hard drive and reinstalled windows, so now Vaio III lives once again. Except he’s empty.

And now I’m paranoid that this is going to happen again, especially since no one knows exactly why the hard drive failed. Just watch: as soon as I get to Calgary, BAM! Dead Vaio.

I reiterate from yesterday: it’s a damn good thing I’m paranoid about things like this happening. Three backups in three different locations across Moscow = good.

Also, props to the super nice VGH guy who could probably tell I was in panic mode and stayed nice and calm and congenial. Thanks for all your help, dude!

R.I.P. Vaio III

Well, it’s a good thing I do monthly backups of all my important files, ‘cause Vaio III just bit the dust totally out of the blue. Apparently the hard drive crashed but no one knows why.

BUT I HAVE EVERYTHING BACKED UP ON TWO DIFFERENT HARD DRIVES IN TWO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS BECAUSE I’M PARANOID ABOUT THIS TYPE OF THING.

Back up your crap, people.

Edit: DAMMIT I lost the order for all of May’s songs (hadn’t backed that up ‘cause it’s not June yet). I guess I’ll just list them alphabetically rather than by date acquired this month. BUGGER.

Again: back up your crap, people.

Redefining

So I can’t REALLY complain about Vaio II losing his life. I mean, the dude lasted through the damp, dark hellhole that was Van Land for two years, plus being carted around North America a whole bunch of times.

Also, I saved about 98% of the stuff I had on him because his hard drive was too small for all my crap and I’d moved everything to an external a few months ago. So my stories, my pics, my music, my internet nonsense [AND MY BLOGS]…all saved.

So I really can’t complain.

But I’m going to anyway, because one of the things I DID lose was my playcounts for my songs. Which is a big deal for me, because I very often sort my songs by playcount and pretty much had a whole hierarchy going on where I defined my “top 50” songs by playcount.

Well, that’s all gone now, so next comes the arduous task of redefining my favorite songs.

That’s hard for me.

But exciting, too. I think with the nearly three years of downloading a new song every day, my musical tastes have evolved a bit. So things that were on my “favorites” playlist from before that may just have been on there due to past playcounts—even though I haven’t played them in months—have all been removed. Time to start anew!

Haha,  I know none of you care, but this is pretty much the most exciting non-school-related thing to happen since September.

Happy birthday.

Vaio III is here!

He’s 750 GB. He’s got a back-lit keyboard. He’s compact and cool.

WOO!

I’mma go set him up.

I’m mourning

Bad news, all.

Vaio II is no more.

His hard drive had a serious mental breakdown, so I took him in to see if someone could fix him up. Nope.

Thank god for external hard drives, eh?

Big Compy’s still up and running, so I’m not totally helpless and curled up crying on the floor due to lack of internet.

But I’m sad. Vaio II was family.

Edit: His successor, Vaio III, has been purchased. He looks like this.

Old Vaio is Old

My stuff came this morning, yay!

First thing I did involved digging out the monitor to Big Compy and hooking it to Old Vaio (the one with the busted screen). Laughed at all the old crap from high school senior year and all my undergraduate silliness.

Examples!

Haha, I’d totally forgotten about the time I recreated Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” using flour, water, and food coloring.

Spinning pineapple drawn and animated in Flash! I had this titled thereisaseasonturnturnturn.gif. (EDIT: apparently you have to click on stationary pineapple to get it its own page. It’ll spin there.) (EDIT 2: apparently it depends on your browser)

A bunch of my silly high school friends and me at a bowling party. Poor Aneel.

An experiment with eyeliner and some eyeshadow back when I actually had eyeliner. I might still have some, but who knows where it is.

Also, of the 50 songs I currently have rated 5 stars, 22 of them were rated 5 stars back in the era of Old Vaio.

That is all.

My new best friend

Vaio II has arrived.

And Vaio II looks GREAT. He’s so quiet! He can run on battery! He has FREE HARD DRIVE SPACE!!

Yay.

Vaio on life support!

So…uh…

Vaio’s screen kinda bit it. I was sitting there listening to music and moved the screen to adjust its tilt, and it instantly cracked and spider-webbed from the point of contact. So I now can see nothing but this beautiful spider web pattern on the main screen, and have an external Dell (ewww!) monitor hooked up so I can actually use it.

So yeah. Vaio’s on monitor dialysis. Other than that (and its lack of hard drive space and 400 db fan), it works fine still. But I guess I can’t really use it as a laptop if I have to hook it to an external monitor (even though it was already tethered via power supply and internet).

Man, Sony makes some durable computers.
