BIG MUSIC

So I posted about the Family Guy version of Shipoopi a few weeks ago (or days ago? Time has no meaning anymore), which made me want to re-watch The Music Man. Which made me want to re-watch all those big musical movies from the 1950s-1960s that I used to watch a lot when I was a kid.

You really have to appreciate the camera work, choreography, and athleticism for a lot of these big songs.

“Shipoopi” from the 1962 version of The Music Man:

Buddy Hackett just jumping around at 1:57, hahaha.

And, of course, the “76 Trombones” scene was parodied in The Simpsons’ “Marge vs. the Molnorail”:

Fun fact: when I was in drama in 12th grade, we reenacted this whole scene while waiting around for the “who is going to State” results.

But nothing beats Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

The athleticism of the actors playing the Pontipee brothers (dudes in the colorful shirts) is ridiculous. Especially the guy who plays Frank (red shirt, Tommy Rall).

And it’s not a musical or dance scene, but I still love that avalanche scene from this movie, hahaha. (I can’t find a good version of it on YouTube, so you’ll just have to take my word for it that it’s like 20 seconds of awesomeness.)

A Music Blog!

It’s not like I have one of those every other day, huh??
??????

Anyway.

Music #1: I had the “Mr. Booze” song from Family Guy stuck in my head all afternoon. Whether you like Family Guy or not, you have to give Seth MacFarlane credit for how good he is at finding catchy songs and having them sung very well.

Music #2: Again, even though it’s not an original, Peter singing the entirety of the “Shipoopi” song from The Music Man as a touchdown celebration is pretty great, too.

(Now I want to watch The Music Man)

Music #3: While on my walk this morning, I had my “favorites” playlist on shuffle and this song came up. I hadn’t listened to it in a long time and I forgot how beautifully heartbreaking it is.

Music #4: I absolutely love this song. I would have lost my mind if I had been at this thing.

END!
